A few months ago I heard a rock hit my windshield at the edge of the black mask for the forward looking camera behind the rear view mirror, driver side (I have ACC). Since I did not see it from inside I tried to fill it and leave it alone. Well, as I suspected would happen, one of the little spider cracks finally grew to about eight inches long just in front of the driver side of the windshield. I called my local Porsche dealer and they want $1400 dollars to replace the windshield and recalibrate the camera, etc. Seems a little high to me but in over 35 years of driving I have had only one other Windshield replaced (about 22 years ago) so I do not know what they usually cost. I did go on the Safelite website to get an estimate, unfortunately they don't seem to have a menu item for my Boxster. It's a 2018 BGTS. I looked at he cost for a BS and it was about $500 without any calibration. Also, I had Safelite repair an earlier small crack in my windshield and they did a horrible job and made it worse than just leaving it alone. Therefore I am leery about letting them try to replace my windshield.
Any experience out there?
I had mine replaced at the dealer, who contracted it out to a third party shop (not sure who) for R&I. Total cost was around $1600 - $1200 or so for parts, $300 for sublet labor and the remainder for sales tax. The installer actually scratched the living crap out of the glass right in the drivers line of sight, which my service advisor caught and had a new windshield installed. Was nice to not have to fight to get a replacement as I have had to do after bad installs with SafeLite on other cars.
Someone told me to check if my insurance policy had windshield coverage or a glass buyback. Never would have thought about going through insurance, but sure enough I did have that coverage and my insurance ended up covering the replacement less a $100 deductible with no impact on premiums. Worth a shot.
I was against going to the dealership to have the windshield installed but after talking to safelite multiple times and rescheduling 3 times and getting quoted higher prices every time I just went with the dealership. Total cost was under 1500 with PCA discount and before credit card cash back. I do have to mention, one dealership said it would take 6-9 weeks to get the glass unless I wanted to pay an additional 300 dollars. The dealership I went ended up with was upfront about 500 was for the sublet and whatever the part cost was the rest. Job was scheduled on Thursday, dropped off Saturday and ready for pick up by Wednesday.
Thanks for the response, I noticed that you live in CA. My insurance, AAA, says that windshield replacement is part of comprehensive after my deductible which is $1000. What insurance company do you have? Is your deductible only $100 or does your insurance company cover glass separately? Thanks.
Had a Taycan windshield replaced this week at the dealer. They bring in an outside team to do the work but they do have to calibrate the camera afterwards. Insurance paid for it but it was close to $2K total to replace it. It took a few weeks to get the part in.

I have Farmers. Glass is covered separately under what they call a glass deductible buy back, which I'd apparently been paying them $10/yr for. $100 deductible applies to glass replacement and is waived for repairs. They had the claim approved same day and reimbursement less deductible out the day after replacement was completed.
Thanks, AAA does not seem to have this coverage. Not because of this, but I have been considering getting a quote from Farmers and from State Farm. Your experience may put Farmers on the forefront.

For what it's worth I actually moved from State Farm to Farmers and have been much happier with Farmers so far. Better rate and the claim process has been much smoother.
If you want an agent referral feel free to PM me. Not sure it matters in this day and age but mine is based out of Costa Mesa.
The many different sensors on these cars these days makes it a chore for the glass installer to 'get it right' every time. You certainly don't want to be the first model Whatever and Make whatever car that they are doing the glass replacement. The sensors need to be installed correctly, with the correct installation seal, etc.
I have full glass coverage with USAA. Deductible does not apply.
I use the installer who used to work at the high-end dealers in town. Never had an issue with him.
Ok, just wanted to follow up on this thread, thanks all for your experiences and information. I decided to have Porsche replace my windshield and the cost was about $1500. My insurance, AAA, covered the cost after my deductible which is $1000. I will be looking for insurance companies that offer an additional policy with a low deductible for just the windshield.
I'm up in Canada but last year when I bought my GTS, the dealer offered me an option, some sort of insurance/road hazard plan for my windshield directly from them.
It cost about $1200-$1300 CAD to purchase the plan. Before buying it I went to the parts department and checked how much a windshield for my car would cost to replace and it turns out with my discount it was about the same as the plan.
However, the plan covers me for 3 years and up to $5000 CAD in windshield replacement... no brainer, I bought the plan.
Basically with this plan I can change a windshield every year for 3 years without having to dish out any money.
This morning my car is in for its usual annual maintenance and yes I'm having the windshield replaced because late last fall I took a rock in the windshield and it cracked so we will see how this plan and the install turns out.
Once the new windshield in, I'm having a windshield protection film added by the same shop that did PPF to the car. I'm told that they are great and that they don't affect visibility under all conditions... Time will tell.

Thanks for the reply. Are you concerned about scratches to the film when using the windshield wipers?
I'm told it is a non issue and that in fact it is even more resistant to damages than the PPF.
However it is not 100% damage proof of course and I know someone that tracks his GT3RS with it and it is getting pounded and damaged but it is removable and replaceable for a lot less (substantially) than a windshield.
Will take pictures of the install and give it an initial review once all is done and get to drive the car with it installed.
