Default am I being unreasonable?

interested in purchasing a 2018 718 base cayman with a 6 spd manual. Found a 2018 at a local dealership that is the perfect color combo but lacking sport chrono (almost impossible to find on a base cayman; want it for the rev matching) and sport exhaust (does have the sport tips). original sticker was $63,900. they're asking $52k. car is almost out of warranty and has 26k miles. I feel like the car is worth mid $40s but would be willing to pay $48k. is that unreasonable?

Have you made the 48K offer? Worst case scenario is they say no. It's a seller's market right now, but it's worth a shot.

Reasonable has *nothing* to do with markets.

It’s a sellers market right now. New Porsche Sports Cars are thin on the ground. Production is very thin due to what appears to be supply chain issues.

People want Porsches so used market is absorbing demand. Thus price appreciation.

Make an offer. Negotiate. If you can’t make a deal move on. Wait for the next one.

A $4k spread between bid and ask on $54k doesn’t sound like an impossible negotiation barrier.

SC - software and console button only - was addable after the fact on 981s. Might be the same for 718. Might be something to work into the deal.

Is it a Porsche dealership? Is it CPOed? I’m guessing the answer to both questions is no.

On that basis the price sounds high and I would agree with the $48,000 price.

However, I was just at my Porsche dealer and here’s their inventory of new and used 911 and 718 cars on the lot and in the showroom: Cayman GTS, Boxster GTS, Spyder. Those are their only sports cars and they are all customer cars with a deposit but they are subject to the stop sale. Point is there are no available cars. The seller can just hold on and someone will buy it.

Back in May 2020, I picked up my CPO 2018 Cayman S before the market went crazy... Similarly spec'd CPO Caymans today are being listed for $10k+ more than what I paid. I love my car, but I wouldn't have paid that premium.

thanks guys. made an offer of $47k and they came back at $50k but they also have an additional $1500 in fees ($1k doc fee and $545 in title and tag fees). I'll pass for now; cant imagine this supply issue will continue for much longer.

never heard of such a thing. the only thing i care for in the SC package is the rev matching. I would love to be able to add rev match via software update.. anybody know if thats possible?

True for the 987 generation. Technically true for the 981 generation but a lot more involved (I just got schooled on this yesterday)

$1k doc fee?? Wow.....

The Title and tag fee is non negotiable.....state collects that from the dealer. That's an actual cost/fee. I highly doubt they are inflating that.

OP: rev matching is nice but almost too nice, too easy to always use it. The pedal position on the base 718 is perfect for do it yourself rev matching and heal toe. I currently have a 911 GTS and had a Cayman GTS that came with SC and rev matching. I purposely spec'ed my base Boxster 718 without it. I've gotten really good at it since I have no choice, a skill I developed in an 06 Cayman with no SC option, and then lost with the GTS's.

the supply issue may last for many months. There’s no end in sight, and building a new fab for microchips is a year+ long project costing billions only possible by a handful of companies in the world.

$51 doesn’t seem so bad. It’s your money, but you won’t have many choices if you want something fun to drive this summer…

At my dealership - not in the insane SoCal or Bay areas - if you want a new 992 and got in line a month ago, the expected delivery date is early summer 2022. Oh, and that was *before* build dates for already allocated, ordered, p-coded production slots vanished with no visibility into new start dates.

So... good luck with that imagination. But, right now, it looks like new Porsche Sports Cars are going to be thin for 12 months at least which means that sellers on the secondary market are in control.

i understand.. and this is a second fun car for me so it's not an issue waiting. Honestly if this car had SC and sport exhaust i would have jumped on it. But it's not the perfect car for me at a not perfect price.

I mean okay but would life be so bad driving it without sports exhaust and trading it in for the perfect car when supply made that possible ?

everybody’s circumstances are different. Personally I can’t imagine not driving an awesome car for 12+ months over a $1500 disagreement. Money is fungible. I’d rather be driving than winning the negotiation on the deal.
