Default Oil change on a 4 banger 718?

Going to help a friend/neighbor with a 718 Boxster S change his oil. Could only find one video on youtube and it sounds like the oil filter is a b*tch to get at... it's not exactly easy on my 981 spyder but I've gotten used to it after 4+ years. At least it's not a new one with the particulate filter and oil you can only get at the dealer!!

Anyone done it yet with any suggestions?

There's a long thread on the 718forum.com. It's a little problematic but nothing crazy. Just take you twice as long as you normally would expect.

Access to the filter differs by transmission. I have a manual, so I didn't need to remove the level sensor. Access is the filter is a pain, it's on the drivers side, you can just make it out from the wheel well. The filter mount does have a sill catch, which you can attach a hose. No oil bath like the 981, which was welcome. Access is tight, so using the Hazet 2169 socket helps.

That's a good write up . Looks like that is for a manual. PDK has the extra step of unbolting the headlight leveling arm

Well, that was a major PITA... helped a friend change the oil on his 718GTS, unfortunately with PDK not a manual. I thought the filter was in a sh*tty location on my 981 spyder but this car takes the cake. Even with only 4 cylinders they manage to hide the filter in a place almost impossible to get out! They definitely don't want us to do it... thought we'd try to do without removing the leveling sensor and found out it was impossible. And getting access to the 10mm bolt that holds it is quite a challenge. Also took off the right rear tire so access was a little better. Must have gone up and down on the lift a dozen times...

Not for the faint of heart but at least I should be able to do it the next time in half the time!!

Haha...glad you got it done but...You were warned!

Interestingly, I didn’t have to take the wheel off but I did need to jack up the left rear wheel( when it was on a 4 post lift) so the suspension was at a better angle to squeeze the filter out.

I have not looked at mine , but is the leveler arm only in the PLDS ? I have the “base” headlights in my 18 GTS

Everything I’ve read leads me to believe the leveler arm is only on PLDS, and only an issue when combined with PDK.

it was a pain for me to remove but I think the biggest problem for me is I needed an extra long wrench. I spent an hour jury rigging, stretching and finagling. Subsequently I got the right tool and expect it to go smoothly next time. For me, the problem was more tool related than anything. Oh yeah, now I remember, I dropped the attachment bolt and spent another 30 mins looking for it, LOL.

Yes, a very long 10mm wrench will make it a lot easier. I did it with a short offset wrench but it was a pain. You can hope your headlights don't have those sensors!

When he was speccing his car, I told my neighbor to get a stick!

Leveler arm is still there, it's used for the suspension if you car has PASM. Only have to remove it if your car is a PDK.

I have the base headlights and have the sensor. But I have a manual so don't need to remove it.

I shall DIY the oil change myself. With this information and my friend who is an Expert Porsche Mechanic I can do it!!!!!! LOL. My RS6 ('03') was a pain because you have to drop the torsion bar and can only get the filter out by tipping it so that the remaining oil spills on you. My '18 M5 is a snap to change the oil, both the drain plug and the filter housing have access without removing any under panel. I wish I had one of those fancy lifts in my garage! Crawling under the car with ramps is.....fun......NOT.....

I love the oil drain guide by the oil filter housing, that is slick.
