Default Electric Boxster/Cayman

Looks like the electric Boxster/Cayman is still at least another car generation away.

Yeah, disappointing. The 2008 Tesla roadster weighed under 3000# and the 2020 appears the same size as the model 3 so probably around 4000#. Porsche could make a reasonably light weight Cayman. I’m guessing the real reason is they don’t think it’s economical. The 2008 roadster base would be over $130,000 in today’s dollars. $35K more than a gt4 and more than some 992s. It doesn’t fit with keeping the 911 pre-eminent

I will shed no tears for the stillborn electric Cayman/Boxster replacement.

good points. Porsche might not be able to make an electric cayman/Boxster and still keep the price under the cost of a 911 while maintaining the huge Porsche profit margin.

However a modern day Tesla roadster with same specs as 2008 would now be significantly cheaper as battery costs today are much less now than 12 years ago.

Weight is definitely an issue for Porsche as one could argue that they over engineer their current electric cars. The power and 0-60 times of the Taycan and Model S are in same ballpark, yet the Taycan is 200 lbs heavier, due to multiple factors.

Porsche might struggle to create a competitor to a Tesla model 3 Performance, which now with the latest software update, has a 0-60 time of 3 seconds flat, 495 torque, and weighs 900 pounds less than the Model S and 1000 pounds less than the Taycan.

I’d be very interested in an electric lightweight roadster from Porsche or Tesla, but I think both companies are going the extreme power with extra weight route instead of a relatively lightweight tossable car, and I’d prefer to drive the later.
