Default Reasonable offer for 2018 Cayman S dealer demo?

Hello 718 owners,

Considering picking up a 718 Cayman S to replace my 2015 MB E63. My girlfriend has two RAV4 so I no longer need a 4-door. I was also considering a CPO base 2017 911-carrera with 7 speed. Wonderful manual but there was a ton of cabin drone even when coasting in neutral. I don't know if that's typical with the 991.2 generation or it was just this car?

Anyways, dealer has a 2018 Graphite blue Cayman S with an $87K sticker. It's a dealer demo with 6500 miles. Warranty started September of 2018 (last year). They're asking $78K. This seems way high considering that even CPO'd 2018 Cayman S are sell for $72K with lower miles. Well optioned, low mileage 2018 cayman S non certified are mid to high $60K cars.

What would be a fair offer for this car? (has premium package, PDK, PASM, LCA, ventilated seats, entry & drive)

So it's not even CPO'd? Dealer demos get beat up on pretty badly so I would not touch a demo without CPO. I think you are correct to feel that the asking price is way too high. I got a CPO'd 2017 CS with 8K miles for $67K. 20" Carrera S wheels, PASM Sport, ventilated 18 way seats with memory, full leather, Sport Chrono, Sport exhaust, Bose, and useless-to-me navi with Porsche Connect Plus. Manual though but as you may know, manuals are commanding the same values as PDKs on the used market. Original MSRP was $88,735. Graphite blue is a premium color and may be good for a $2K up charge max.

I would say $75K max CPO'd would be fairer but a lot more comfortable as $72K. Maybe $73K if you love the color. Supply and demand rules by region is a factor too although with nationwide shipping for no more than $1500, that's becoming less and less of a factor.

No more than $70K IMO, with oil change, balance and alignment, new cabin filter, full CPO, and complete service records. Good luck!

Yep - non CPO for $78,940. After reading your reply, I'd insist on CPO. And then I think a fair offer is only about $71K max considering the car does not have Sport Chrono or PTV.

Your car sounds like a great spec. As far as the transmission goes, I'm probably 51/49 manual vs. PDK. If I were buying new, I'd spec the manual but used I'm okay with PDK. My test drive was with a 718 Boxter S PDK. This was the first time I had driven a newer vintage PDK and I came away thoroughly impressed. I actually had fun with it which is something that never happened with the DSG Audi S6 I owned, or any of the BMW or Mercedes semi-automatics I've driven.

Thanks for the reply!

My hearing is phenomenal (just ask my wife) but I have a '17 base Carrera 7MT, and I would not say I've ever experienced a "drone". Between the two choices you are considering, a CPO '17-'18 991.2 and a '18 718CS, are night and day different in terms of experience. I owned a 981CS for a while before my 991, and am extremely glad I made the upgrade to a 911. The 981CS was tons of fun, but small, for me at least. For daily livability the 911 is a much better bet. But that's not what you asked, of course. Apologies for drift.

Yes, a demo '18 718S at $78K sounds like they are on crack. That seems way out of line.

Thanks Rich! Yes, the drone was extremely noticeable. This particular car had a Fabspeed aftermarket exhaust. I'm wondering if it had other modifications that could have contributed to the noise. I really need to drive a different 911 so I have a reference.

I would still consider a base 911 if I can't make headway on pricing with the Cayman.

As others have said, way too high. I just picked up a brand new 2018 Cayman S for $74k ($87k MSRP), with full 4 year warranty intact. Good luck, graphite blue is an awesome color

Ah - Aftermarket exhaust. Yeah no clue on that. Fabspeed is a tuner but I’m not familiar. I’m more of a leave it the heck alone guy. Mind sounds great at 70+.

Best of luck with your search. A 718CS is a hell of a car. The T motor should really wake up the chassis. I had the 3,4 NA flat six in my ‘14 981S but you had to keep it on the boil. Compared to my 991.2, it felt a tick slower; but the 3.0T in the 911 has so much grunt at low RPM it makes a vert satisfying DD. I would imagine the 718 would be similar. Neither one is a bad choice though, let me stress; just, different.

My used 991.2 cost me low six figures though. It turned out my wife liked Porsche’s so much I had to get her a new Cayenne. Happy wife happy life.

No issues at a with choosing PDK. If I were to drive mine during rush hours more than 2x a week, I'd go PDK too. The modern Porsche PDK is phenomenal. I commuted in a STi daily until it got to be too much on my knee so I got a DSG GTI so I could keep the STi as a weekend car which was fun. Then I upgraded the GTI to a Macan for the psuedo-PDK, sold the STi, and got the Cayman as a weekend car.

We picked up a 718CS a month ago that had the same MSRP, also a dealer demo, only 1500 miles more and 6 months less warranty left on it. Also, it was a private sale, not a dealer (the first owner drove it for just a few months and then had to upgrade to a 991.2 GTS due to a family situation). $61.5K. Without any extra perks of buying from a dealer, the $78K asking price is insane.

You just nailed the reason you heard drone. The oem exhaust will not produce noticeable drone.

Fabspeed exhausts drone so much. If you compare PSE to PSE, i'm willing to bet you'll much prefer a 911 considering you're coming from an E63. The 911 has a quieter cabin than a 718, and is also roomier. I'd highly recommend you test another stock 991.2 if you're in the market for a daily

What would be a fair offer for this car? (has premium package, PDK, PASM, LCA, ventilated seats, entry & drive)
There are three components to the exhaust: headers, catalytic converter sections, and rear exhaust. On the base non-PSE cars you could mod both headers and cat sections and it would not induce much drone with the factory rear. The rear exhaust is what controls volume and drone on the non-PSE cars and we put extensive work into trying to combat the drone which can be present once you uncork the rear. You can see more information about why we use helmholtz resonators instead of standard resonators in our thread here. You could solve that problem by putting on a factory rear exhaust or trying our rear exhaust if you'd like to keep the aggression while having less drone.

@AlphabetDistrict , as others have said, that price is way too high. I just wanted make a comment on cabin sound between a 911 and 718 since I have both. Even my Carrera T with less sound insulation is quieter than my 718. I even had the fake Soundaktor disconnected, which I think is a must for the 718. With the fake sound, the 718 cabin noise is not exactly pleasant. The 911 has sound piped in thru a tube and sounds very good and the engine is obviously a little further back which makes a difference in cabin noise levels.

I’ve grown to appreciate the sound of the turbo F4 in the 718 and it has the Porsche DNA ( car & engine ) .
