Default About to buy a 2017 CS, worried about 3rd gear. CPO questions.

I found a low mileage 2017 Cayman S with the options I want. It’s a manual. I’ve read about 3rd gear failures and I’m starting to worry. The car was originally sold in November 2016, so there’s only about a year left of the manufactures warranty. The car has had two owners, and was previously sold as a Porsche Certified Pre Owned. Unfortunately it’s been sold at an auction, and it’s now at a dealer. According to Porsche’s policy the car has to be sold by a private seller in order to transfer the CPO warranty. I’d feel a lot better if I could get it with the extended power train warranty.

I really wanted a manual. I know they’re a bit slower but for me, rolling your own gears is a lot of the fun of driving. Should I be worried about the transmission?

How much would it cost to get the CPO warranty? With the CPO warranty, do you need to have the oil changed at the dealer? I prefer to change my own oil.

Should I wait for a newer car to pop up with more warranty?

Third gear failures?

Seems to me if you are worried about this car, be an idea to wait for another CPO 718 to pop up.

New to the Porsche thing myself.... In the Corvette world if you've purchased a car from auction, private owner, non-Chevy dealer, ect... as long as it's in factory B2B warranty you could get the GMEPP (General Motors Extended Protection Plan) which is basically the same as CPO.

Is there not something like this you can do on Porsche?

I think there is, but I’m not sure of the cost. The seller said some dealers may honor the CPO warranty, but technically they don’t have to. I’ve seen some mentions of 3rd gear failing due to the design, they’re welded. Also saw mention that this issue was fixed in cars manufactured after mid 2017. The car only has ten thousand miles and looks perfect.

I bought a CPO with PDK! Drove it home from Fort Lauderdale, through the Tail of the Dragon and the Blue Ridge Parkway. 1700 miles in two days! I test drove a manual and preferred the PDK, It’s fantastic.
