718GTS Laguna Seca lap

Anyone see Randy Pobst drive a bone stock 718GTS on Pilot4S's at Laguna Seca and post a 1:38? What an amazing achievement showing the capability of the 4cyl turbo, despite street tires. Randy's time in the GT4 back in 2015 was 1:37 on Cup2s, so the 718GTS could be the faster car on equal tires.

Link:

Just for a fun comparison, these are the top 3 times in the GT4 forum:
Laguna Seca - Salinas, CA
1. 1:38.49 - OrthoJoe on Oct, 2016 tires: RE71, mods: Standard suspension bits for track alignment - post #332
2. 1:39.20 - Mech33 on 6/13/17 tires: RE-71R, - post #759video
#356
3. 1:39.8X - doborder Oct, 2016 tires: Re-71Rs, modes: u/k - post #334

Actually 138.8, but what's mere .8 more of a second? lol (although I have no idea what the GT4's real time was in tenths either)

Was the GT4 on Cup 2s or is that a guess? They came with Dunlops too. Did the GT4 have steel brakes as the GTS?

It's also PDK versus 6 speed, and different days (climate and track condition) affects the outcome too.

But just goes to show Porsche knows what they're doing.

Watched it many times, he loves the car.

You should check out this video if you haven't already. Randy drove a (lightly modified?) 981 GT4 and a stock 718 S back-to-back on Streets of Willow. The GT4 came out ahead by 1.5 seconds. Conclusion? Put the same tires on the 718 S and it beats the GT4.

In F1, 1.5 seconds is an eternity. I don't think anyone makes an R compound in the actual sizes Porsche uses for the 718 S/GTS if that matters. At least in 20". Same applied to the 981 Spyder which sucked as I hated the Pirellis it came with. Would have been nice to see a manual 718 chosen for the comparo to keep things level. Not only does the older GT4 win here, it wins in future value, desirability, wow factor, panty-dropping, and the more fun-to-drive factor. It loses in audio performance, parking precision, and eating while driving ergonomics (6MT v PDK).

But the non-purists can get a PDK GT4 next generation and the world will be right again. It will probably even have Apple CarPlay. At least future comparos might be a bit more level.

If I was still daily driving one of the many Boxsters and Caymans I've owned, I'd choose a 987, and pre-DFI at that. For the best Cayman toy you can still buy today, it's the GT4.

Car looks incredibly composed. If it looked and sounded better, I'd probably have one in the driveway.

Nice comparison.

You can fit 981 GT4 wheels with the larger 295 rear, 245 front cup 2 tires to the 718 for extra traction. Now that would be a good comparison! The current tires are too small at the limit.

I know another person who just fit the GT4 size Cup 2 tires to his 718 Carrera S wheels. Maybe the rear rim was a little narrow at 10" but seemed to work ok.

Maybe not necessary but there is also a guy who has fit 911 Carrera S IV wheels 8.5 x 20 front, 11.5 x 20 rear with 245s and 305s on the rear without any rubbing.

Anyone photos of the GT4 wheels on the 718?

Also note, the extra yard of track after #6 and #11 makes a significant difference in 2018 vs 2016-17.

I haven't seen photos with the GT4 wheels but for comparison this is a a link to an owner in Belgium who has the wider 911 Carrera IV wheels. It is surprising what you can fit!

If it fits on a GT4 rim wise it will fit on a 718S/GTS. I run 8.5 x 19 front and 11 x 19 ET50 rear with a 7mm spacer. I’m not getting into the debate of Por/Baru motor vs 6NA but anybody who discounts the track performance of the 718 is smoking whacky tabaky. :)
