Exactly. When a product you love changes in a way you don't like, some of us vent. And some people take a negative comment about a car as a negative comment about them personally. Which it is not.

Venting for a reason depending on what you value most. Automotive evolution of sports cars in general has created quite an interesting dichotomy which isn't exclusive to Porsche. In one view performance has ever increased to the point that today's pedestrian cars easily outperform modern classic sports cars that ruled streets and tracks not so long ago, like the E46 M3. At the same time, most sports cars have become ever increasingly luxurious, automated, heavy, and less involving although perhaps safer. With each new generation you get more performance/technology and arguably less of a pure driving experience due to so much automation controlling the motor and chassis. This has a lot to do with why many purists are reluctant to praise subsequent generations. When Porsche went with electric assisted steering many scoffed at what they knew was a big loss in driving enjoyment. I didn't much care for the 981 at first due to what I perceived as an over designed interior and the flattened body curves. Took me a long time to come to appreciate the 981 and it's increased refinement. But it did retain much of the driving character of the 987 with the same 3.4l power plants so I never wrote it off as a car I may own some day. Think of these two dichotomies as trend curves with the performance curve going up and the pure driving involvement curve trending down. This is why so many hold on tight to older Porsches, whether from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s or early to mid teens. The gap in these curves will only continue to widen especially with electric power on the horizon. Those who predominantly appreciate performance over all else belong to the happiest of the two groups. Every new generation is a step forward with little to no drawbacks. Unfortunately for me I lean more toward the purist view and therefore the cars I'm most interested in are mostly obsolete. It's kind of a bummer feeling. Even a new Spyder won't excite me as I think more power means less duration of usable throttle to enjoy. Cars can have too much power. Power without control is a negative. While I personally perfer NA to turbo, I do believe had Porsche created a small flat 6 turbo for the 982 this division of the platform would have been completely avoided. The flat 6 turbo in the 991 isn't getting near the negativity from traditionalists as is the 982.

Look, I've driven them, and I hate the way they drive. And I hate that I hate the way they drive. I want to love them, the way I love my 981 Spyder. But they have serious turbo lag, they're very pricey, and they sound terrible. IMO. That's just not a combination I'm interested in purchasing. To those who are, aces! Have at it. Lord knows good discounts are available.

It really is a personal choice. A local dealer offered me an attractive price on a 981 Spyder for my wife. She took one look at it and walked away. Thought it was ugly.

This same theme is played out in other aspects of life. For example, people hate us millenials, call us stupid and all that :-) Us millenials also think the generation after us is all messed up in the head (they are actually)

It’s not whether something is better or worse, it’s just different. The 718 is faster, but so is a Dodge Viper (which I encountered the other night). Doesn’t mean the 718 will fit the bill for everyone

So did I! The first time I saw one i couldn't decide if the front bumper looked more like a fish gasping for air or Thomas the Train. I have one in my garage and I still can't decide.

One of the issues is the difference between "I don't like X." and "X is sh*t." The first is a personal opinion and everyone has one and is entitled to it. The second is a general and definite judgement and assumes certainty. Unless the issuer of the judgement is an accepted expert this is likely to generate heat from others who disagree.

There have been both types of statements here and elsewhere, so some get accepted and others rejected.

Looked good to me . I thought Agate/Bordeaux would make a nice combo.

I'll bite. Just ordered a Cayman GTS and coming from a long line of Pcar ownership starting with an 85 911, 95 993, then a new 05 6GT3, 02 GT2' another 6GT3 and a 981 CGTS I won't feel any 4 cyl remorse with 350rwhp when I go hunting GT4's.

OK, there is now a 718 forum. At the same time be advised that the mods will deal harshly with the kind of nonsense we saw in the 991 forum with the turbo and non tubo proponents dumping on each other. That resulted in bans and the same will apply in the 718 forum. So those of you who have already dissed the 718 expect to pay the price. Same goes for dumping on the 6 cylinder versions.

I'd lilke to remind you all that this is a community of people sharing a passion for Porsches - all of them.

Regards,

Good deal. I don't think 981 owners are going to be frequenting the 718 forum, so it should be just fine.

Should drop the 718 from this forum's name too though.
