Default Which In Car Video Camera System ?

I’m wondering which type of setup I should get to take videos from inside my car on track days.

I know there have been a few posts using inexpensive digital cameras in video mode. They seem to work fine, but mounting them and activating them “on & off” seems to be the issue there.

I’ve seen the bullet or lipstick style cameras with digital video recording to a SD card, mounted on the harness-roll bar, along with a separate ON-OFF controller. That looks like the way to go. Very sensible, particularly at speed.

Anybody know of any reasonably priced “systems” for in-car on-board video recording?

I use the DaVid system with two bullet cameras; one facing the road and one facing the driver and gear-stick. The datalog comes from the Aim Data Logger. The final product (superimposed data log and video image) is recorded on a chase cam SD recorder with 16GB SD card. As an external microphone, I'm using SP-PASM-2 preamp mic from soundprofessionals.com which helped with wind noise issues a lot. I also have a small 3.5" monitor to check whether everything is alright before starting to record. It's a bit complicated setup but works well. It's also discrete and does not attrack the attention of marshalls on tracks where recording is not allowed (think of a long track somewhere in Europe ).

I guess I'm looking for something more basic, before I commit to a more serious investment.

Then I recommend getting a suction cup camera mount which you can use with any camcorder. You can mount it on the side window, sunroof glass (my choice) or the front window. Also get a wide angle lens adaptor for your camera to include more of the inside car within the frame. I did it many times and it's the cheapest and most effective solution.

The video quality is exceptional. Can you share the details of the components used?

I never would have guessed it was a self-contained camcorder. Truly superb video. I wonder if I can use it with an AIM DaVid video/datalogging system? Obviuosly I need to do some more research.

This is the next big thing in a very smaaaall package. Records to an SD disk, and direct downloads to your laptop. http://www.elmo.co.jp/suv-cam/en/index.html

I used the roll bar mount from Chase Cam to mount the camera and make this video. Of course You Tube kills the quality, the original is excellent.

PS how do you embed the youtube window in a post?
