Default Tire Recomm for 03 C4S

Dropping in from the 944 forum to help out a fellow at work. Has an 03 C4S, daily driver and asked me for tire advice. Doesn't really like the Pirelli OEM tires, but doesn't want any r-comp type tire. He drives the car year round in Virginia and likes to cut up a country road now and then.

Search turned up a couple thumbs up for Kuhmos. These didn't appear in Tirerack or DiscountTire's list.

What's the consensus and where to order?

Thanks!

found some others recommend Falken FK452. But haven't found a place online that carries those in stock size. Those any good?

We recommend the Michelin PS2 as well. If he wants to go with a lesser priced alternative, we have had great response from Toyo Tires, especially the T1R.

For a DOT legal slick, we also ran the R888.

Check them out at http://www.toyo.com/docs/tires/tires.asp?category=sport.

Let us know the fitments your friend wants to run and we can get you a price together.

Michelin PS2 - best tire for a 996, IMO. I had the P-Zeros and BridgestineRE750, and now PS2's, which are the best of the three tires I have tried on my 996.

Also, depending on how many miles he drives on the car, like if its a true second car for weekend drives, the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup is the most fun. It takes the PS2 to another level!

michelin ps2s are the best period
michelin ps cups are only for the track, you will seriously get your self wrapped around a tree if you hit a puddle with them or if you happen to be on the hwy and get caught in a down pour you likely find out how well Porsche designed the air bags and crumple zones.
Kumho ECSTA SPT are by far the cheapest and are equivalent too or better then any other tire out there.

We have customers that run these on the street at all times and use a true racing slick for the track. Its a setup that must be respected and you are correct with water, any rain and you are safest parking the car and waiting a bit.

I have Yokohama EVS100s on my 17" rims and Sumitomo HTRZ II on my 18" rims. I recommend both tires. The HTRZ II are 220 treadwear and are great every day tires. My EVS100s are 280 treadwear and I use them on the track (plus driving to and from the track). I know lots of people use the EVS100s as they are a great tweener tire. I think a search would turn up a number of hits. I don't run the 18s on the track as I don't want to scratch the rims And my review on Tirerack shows that the EVS100s are a little better overall on the track despite the higher treadwear rating.

The best part is either set of tires is much cheaper than the PS/PS2s and you can get them from TireRack and/or Discount tire.

I also have a set of PS A/S tires that are great in the winter and in the rain. But here in Texas, they really weren't needed, so they just sit in the garage now...

Also, try Costco and Sams, they have great deals on high performance tires.

All things considered, best street tire is PS2 by a wide margin.

MPSC on the street is dumb. Been there, done that. The ride sucks as the sidewall is super stiff. Grip is much worse than PS2 in the dry unless you get them up to temp, which almost never happens on the street (if it did, you'd heat cycle them to death very quickly), and we all know what they're like in the wet. So, where's the advantage for using these as street tires?

I have Falken 452's for about two weeks now. I love them, and really don't feel any major difference from my PS2's.

The best deal on them can be found...at least in my search at www.vulcantires.com

Best of luck,
J
