Replacement engine for my Speedster
I took out the original (have her crated up) and put in a used Baker -prepped 912 engine a while back - now she is on her last legs and thinking of an upgrade..... any thoughts on who is building a nice engine to plug and play? I see a few from "aircooledengines" on eBay but don't know them or their rep tho they sell a ton and have great feedback.
thanks.
thanks.

Baker as in Bruce Baker? I would let him rebuild it. You could also try http://www.willhoitautorestoration.com/index.php
You might try posting this question at the 356 Registry (gotta be a member) or The Samba in the 356 section .

Vic Skirmants 356 Enterprises probably has built more 356 engines and transmissions than anyone else in US. He built a hot street engine for me about 20k miles back and it has been strong and troublefree for last 10 years. He is located in the Detroit area.

+1 on Skirmants.
"porsche-aircooled-engines" on ebay is I am 99% sure one of a number of ebay names used by a guy in the San Francisco bay area who has a LOOOOONG history of major problems (not clearly reflected in his ebay ratings). Be VERY, VERY careful not to buy anything from that guy!

+1 for AVOID aircooledengines on eBay at all costs. The guy Wayne Krieger is notorious. From all the stories I have read, and there are many on all the forums (356 Registry, Pelican Parts, Early 911S Registry), he has had many unsatisfactory business dealings.
John Wilhoit in Long Beach has done a lot to advance the building of hot rod motors: 2-liter displacement, twin plugs, high compression, etc.
Could be Wayne Baker in Orange County, CA too as the original builder.
There are a number of top-notch builders: Larry Markham of Markham Motor Works in Burbank, Dick Aubele (semi-retired) in Frazier Park, and Jacques Le Friant in San Diego off the top of my head.
