Default Barn/garage find assistance

I'm from the 993 board and just wondered if I could get a little help in whether to pursue a car or just ignore. An older gentleman has a 1965 356C in his garage and it has been there a minimum of 8 years, probably more. It never was titled in this state and he starts it up every year and changes the oil every year but he never drives the car, not even a mile. The good news is at least the car will start. It is a coupe with white paint and a red interior. The mileage is 40,000 and original (no doubt about that). It has an a/c system that supposedly was installed by a Porsche dealer in Texas way back when. I have zero knowledge about this system but if a Porsche dealer option, then possibly quite interesting. Obviously the car will need a good service, tires, all the fluids, and whatever else. I'm thinking a minimum of $5,000 to get the car roadworthy provided the engine is OK. It ran fine when put away and the fact that it gets started every year is probably a good sign. He wants in the $30,000 price area but who knows if he would take $25,000 or something in the neighborhood. Would this be an accurate price or just too high to even bother with. I tried looking at examples on the car sites and the prices are all over the place. Cabs seem to be priced higher but maybe that is just the few cars I have been looking at. I see a pretty nice one on ebay right now that looks like it is selling for $33,000 which would make me think this one is priced too high. Thanks in advance. Simple answers are fine if you don't feel like explaining, something like "Don't even bother" or Run for the hills" is sufficient. LOL!!

Your best would be to get lots of photos and post on the 356registry.com board and have someone from the 356registry check it out. Don't ask me how I know problems run deep with kind of car and very expensive to fix.

In your area, I'd contact Tim Herman for expert help.

The SOG of the 356 Registry website:

Prices are all over the place because cars' conditions are all over the place... & the market is "highly dynamic". That price range isn't outside the bell curve. Every deal is as unique as each 356. Only you can decide whether to pursue or not - your intent is critical... reflection & internal clarity is central to being happy buying, owning & driving a 45 yr old Porsche. enjoy & good luck!

Thank you for the replies! I certainly do understand the ramifications of owning a 45 year old Porsche or any 45 year old car for that matter. I am trying to keep up with my 15 year old 993 as it is.

Thank you all very much but I'm going to pass unless the price comes way down. I appreciate your responses.

Could be an unbelievably nice car! 40,000 miles, and if no-hit body, no rust, and perhaps even original paint, it is quite the gem. If so, pricing is low

There was no factory installed ac for 356's. Dealer add-on is of limited value.

Agree.

Truly original cars (paint, interior, engine) with low miles command a premium and, as said above, this could be a real gem and underpriced. But you have to have someone who knows what they are doing check it out, as hidden things can be expensive to fix and greatly affect value. But this one sounds very interesting!

You may note several years ago the tale of a barn find 356 that a gentleman obtained from a widow. It was original in that it had never undergone any sort of body work since it left Zuffenhausen. The factory ultimately got word of the car and offered the new owner a new Carrera in trade for that 356. They wanted an example of an unmolested 356 body to show to their body shop assemblers.

Wonder if the factory still wants to do a similar trade? I'd not give up my 356, but mine is unmolested as well (Dad bought it new), and I'd be happy to loan mine to them for a year or 3 if they did a factory resto on it... they can keep the new Carrera...

Steve,

You don't want the Porsche factory to restore your 356. All the people who built and knew the cars are long gone.

There are, however, a number of top-flight restorarion shops here in the US: Paterek, Wilhoit, etc. Their standards for authenticity are much higher.
