Default lost 3rd & 4th, why?

I fired up my 63 356 the other day, got out in the road, left second and had no where to go but neutral. couldn't get it in 3rd or 4th. it still has R, 1 & 2 but if you try to force it into 3 it wont go and kinda pushed back to the left towards 1.

I took the inspection plate out in the back seat and the plate off from around the shifter but cannot see where it would be binding up. the bushing looks good on the bottom of the shifter.

Any suggestions or common problems? please don't say its internal. I don't have a great porsche mechanic locally so Im scratchin my head here. thanks

Will it go in if you double clutch it, or if the car is stopped?

Default yeah i tried

parked, moving, clutch, no clutch, double clutching, not works. really weird because I've never had a problem with it but it seems like the linkage is binding up on something.
it wasn't a gradual thing, just all of the sudden, really annoying. had been sitting for a while, few months. someone mentioned maybe a detent ball in tranny was stuck?

I had a similar thing happen, only I could only get 3rd & 4th. it was the shifter bushings themselves - the car had been sitting for a while and with a little driving they just came apart. You might check those

I agree with shift bushings, but think more specifically, it is the pair of shift coupler bushings in the back. Near where the linkage goes into the transmission.

Not the bushings at the shift lever. Every 40 years or so the damn things wear out.

I didn't read this whole thread on 356 Talk but looks like it may be helpful:

Unfortunately 356 stuff on RL is very quiet, but the 356 Registry's bulletin board, 356 Talk, is the place to go for technical stuff!
