I've worked at a chemical plant for 28 years it is a dangerous place to work. The first couple of years I worked there I would hear from the old timers how when they were gone they would have to shut the plant down for lack of knowledge, experince, etc. We've had some serious altercations over the years, luckily only 3 lives lost. But it is still running. I'm an old timer now and when I leave they for sure have to shut it down.

Yea right.

Sent an e-mail but honestly am not very optimistic. The "Old Guard" for whatever reason is totally against it...funny related thing: My mother for the longest time [she is only 56] talked about how ridiculous it was that the younger generation used computers for everything. She was vehemently against learning to use one probably due to a mixture of fear, uncertainty, misapplied pride, and a number of other things.

A few years ago we bought her a computer and just taught her basics, where things are, etc, and she eventually started to use it. When she realized how great everything was, she couldn't stop using it. Now she is online and e-mailing constantly and thinks it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

The moral is, sometimes you have to force change on people for their own good I suppose. These cars are old, most of their owners even older, and if the old folks who know all about the cars don't "get with the times" some, a lot of these cars are destined to end up rotting in heaps because the younger crowd is unaware of the cars or how to fix them when stuff breaks. They should do it for the love of the cars!

i've been a registry member for about 6 years and utilized the talk list when i was a new member to gain knowledge and offer what little help i could......but after a while the daily emails got to be too much. about 100 is too many to go through on a regular basis. and if you forget to stop the list when you go on vacation, look out!

i'd also very much welcome a forum like there is here. i'd like to get 'back in the mix" with 356 content.

i'll send an email to chuck as well.

Joanne--I might just do that My thought process is this: I am 27 and by FAR the youngest person in my local club [www.356sog.com]. I'm talking the next youngest person is in his mid 40s and the next one from there is in his mid 50s. Most people are in their late sixties and up.

Sooooo, the younger crowd that would truly love these cars for what they are and not how much money they can make on them is relatively absent from the 356 world, at least that I know of. Most people my age that aren't heavy enthusiasts don't even realize there WAS a Porsche before the 911.

I'm still totally new to the 356 scene, so I defer to the "old-timers". They have the experience and knowledge. Whatever venue makes them comfortable with sharing what's inside their heads and hands is fine by me. I have subscribed to absorb as much as I can as I prepare to dive into my project.

My one frustration however is that MANY of the replies to "how-to" questions get answered "back channel" via private email. That kind of negates the opportunity for shared learning.

You're not the only one who shares that frustration. I just heard all about this "technique" from my old man who uses the talk list. He's 62 and would prefer it was a forum. I'd prefer it was a forum as well, but am young and stubborn and refuse to use it in its current form.

Yup... Been part of one or 2 Forum upheavals and been told to shut up both times by the moderators, so I just stopped reading 356talk. I can get 1st class help on the 912 registry (forum) which by and large deals with similar engines ;-)

I am still a member of the registry because the 356 registry magazine is as good as the talk list is bad !

Default the deed is done

All,

The 356 Registry's 356Talk email list has been around for nearly 15
years ever since Robin Hansen started it with help from Rick Dill. It
has been a source of invaluable 356 information and camaraderie over the
years for all 356 enthusiasts. From time to time over the past few
years, discussion has occurred about changing the format of this list.
There are some who prefer a bulletin board (BB) forum style while others
prefer the immediacy of the existing email listserv. It was not a matter
of old vs. new tech, instead it was about what worked the best for the
subscribers. Unfortunately in the past, it was not possible to please
both sides on this issue.

However, I am happy to announce that you can now "have it your way".
Thanks to the Herculean efforts of Brian O'Kelly with assistance from
Barry Brisco, the 356 Registry will soon change to a system which will
incorporate a fully featured bulletin board forum with the added
capability to subscribe for email delivery. Therefore, those who want
and have been clamoring for the BB forum system with its ability to post
photos and better organize threads should be ecstatic and those who want
to keep getting email like they have been getting can still choose to do
so with minimal impact. It should be the best of both worlds.

Bill Sampson, our current list monitor, will follow up with details on
how to register for the new forum. He has included a lot of detail for
the sake of those who are unfamiliar with this type of forum as the
registration process will involve a few more steps. Those already
familiar with these types of systems should have no issues. Since you
will be able to choose the delivery method in the new system, I ask that
you please refrain from clogging up the 356Talk list debating which
method is best. It is a personal preference issue and you will have a
choice.

We ask that ALL 356Talk list members IMMEDIATELY register for the new
forum and unsubscribe from the old. We will go through a 30 day
transition period at which time the existing 356Talk listserv will be
shut down and all traffic will be in the new 356Talk BB and listserv
system.

As we move to this new and exciting phase for 356Talk, I would like to
once again acknowledge Robin Hansen and Rick Dill for all the work and
effort they put into the creation and maintenance of the original
356Talk. It has been and will continue to be the best real time
information exchange forum for the 356 enthusiast. All those who utilize
the list owe Robin and Rick a huge debt of gratitude.
