Default A beautiful pre-A 356 speedster!

Don't know if the price is right, but the car is beautiful. I was just getting ready to buy it for a Christmas present, but then got to the end of the item description where the seller says it's not a toy (duh). Love when these brokers/sellers get snotty...anyway, check it out!

Merry Christmas!
-Andrew

If the rest of the restoration is like the interior (and in probably is), run away!

Wrong muffler clamps? Bolts instead of studs on oil plate? No speedo cable?, Not correct gauges? Carpet left over from basement (and by same installers)?

I thought I saw this car recently on ebay or somewhere. I smell fraud with this listing.

Although the "Chinese square weave carpet" is definitely not "fitting right"...if this is the real McCoy, it's worth a way more than $30K...regardless of incorrect restoration...

I'd agree with Jim though...it smells like fraud to me...

Maybe. I guess even a junker Speedster tips $30k. But, those wrong gauges really bother me. I mean, what 356 owner would not find real gauges for such a car? It's such a visable and integral part of the car. So, if he wouldn't do that, what other things didn't he do? From rust holes covered in cardboard and bondo, to aluminum soda cans snipped to make bearings for the rods (seen it on a car, really), to sawdust in the tranny to make it run smooth? I know I'm going out there on a limb. And chances are none of these things are true here. All I'm saying is that there is a tip of an iceberg showing, something smells in Denmark, red flags waiving, with a bizarre starting bid of $100k, enough to suggest eBay is the wrong forum to even consider this car! PPI and personal inspection too. (I have a friend who bought an XKE with a long distance PPI from a known Jaguar mechanic, and still he got hosed.)

But, yes, if it is all just cosmetic, and there is truly a solid, straight, original Speedster under there, the other mistakes can be fixed.

The problem with buying a Speedster in today's climate is you don't get to do much choosing. I set the record for 2006 at $62,000 for a 55 Speedster rolling shell. #80244. I told a guy some good advice last week that applies to buying a Speedster right now. If you are worried about the money, buy a B Cab and let the wind flow through your hair, but don't even look for a Speedster if you are concerned about correct guages or carpet. While you are thinking about it some guy in Europe will have already paid for the car.
Not that there was every a great time to buy a Speedster, but right now is the worst.

Happy New Year-

Well, at least it has the right gauges!! :-) I don't know if the green bunge was stock - you may need to check the weave on the material :-)

my D is in better shape & sits on the same cheap dollys! maybe I CAN afford one year at an Ivy League for my daughter...

Adam, I think the choices are every bit as good as ever, but the price point to access those choices is high & growing higher - if you are willing to spend the big $s, the selection is ok. So, it may be more accurate to suggest that in today's climate, deals are getting harder to find. A "deal", if such exists any longer, is a function of luck as much as anything. cheers!

Am I reading that correctly? Was that shell purchased for $62,000?!?!?

I know Speedsters command a pretty penny, but that seems unreal to me.

The best time to purchase a speedster was in 1955.

The guages in the ebay car are correct for a pre-a. Those in the car that Adam sold appear to be from a later car. Here is a close-up of an original pre-a speedster dash. By the way I bought a very nice one owner speedster with 18,000 miles on it in 1971 for $875.00. That may have been about the best time to have bought a speedster.
