Question Stuck muffler

I'm looking for ideas; I have a 912 engine, which is going into my '56, since I LONG ago lost track of the whereabouts of the original Super engine. The 912 engine has an aftermarket muffler on it, looks somewhat like a Bursch, but the muffler is on the opposite side from where I see it mounted on the Bursch adds, so I have no idea who's aftermarket muffler system it is.

The trouble I have, is that some previous owner(s) tightened the slip joint clamp SOOO hard, that the muffler is swaged onto the "J" pipe.

Anyone have any thoughts as to how I might get the muffler off, w/o ruining the muffler? The pipes are just about like new, and I've thought to resell this muffler to some 912 owner, who needs one. Cheaper than a new one would cost, anyway!
I doubt it would fit on the '56, and I choose to try to have an Abarth 4-pipe muffler on my '56 anyway. An Abarth was on this '56, 39 years ago, when my Dad first bought the car, and the exhaust note it put out still rings in my memory! <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Also, before I put the engine into the car, I will take it apart to see if the seller told me the truth about a top end bigger bore rebuild. THEN, I'll be taking the bottom end apart to be certain of it's ability to take the top end's new power output, w/o blowing the engine apart.
No, it isn't being built to be a hot-rod, I just figured that if I can't build it back to original, I'll spend the money to build it the best I can afford.

I'll take suggestions for any paint and body shop(s), and anything anyone has to say about upholstery shops. Paint is about 8+ layers deep, and the carpet is rotted, the headliner is tattered and dangling, the seats aren't much better. Preferably in and around Ohio?

Hello

OK thats quite normal as most people use the wrong clamp type and to much force.

Normaly you slice the pipe and pull/hammer the muffler off.

Then you reshape the J pipe and the muffler joint pipe and if they are bad you renew them or weld a new pipe on.

Most engine rebuilds I had seen on cars coming from oversee are made from people who didn´t know how to work they just dissasemble, buy new parts assemble and well ready is a new rebuilt engine.

Most from these engines didn´t made more then 500 mls on the german Autobahn.

So if you wan´t to make it right then you need a good machine shop and the maestro´s book

If it comes to tuning then be aware that most from the stuff around is dirt cheap and not working very good despite very long. If you wan´t solid power you have to invest time and shop the right & matching parts.

Also you will need the tach drive for the 356 as the 912 had a electric tach ( while you are shoping ).
