I am doing a lite - retoration on my 59' A
New Leather (from Autos Intl), carpet, headliner, seals, Glass. All for about 4K
The install time has been quoted at 2-3 days @ 65/hr. not too bad
I also had my engine requilt (A 912 unit) with a big bore kit and a mild cam for about 3K
but i am leaving the body alone - basically a rust free tub with some "Warts" and so-so chrome (which i like actually)
I am also installing a set of 65 disc brakes. some time this winter
It's a driver. And i intend to keep it on the road.

Finally On the Road again......
Ok - so the cost so far (No paint, but just about everything else)
12+K but it is totally freshened - Engine (kept the block that's about it), interior, Glass, Seals, Suspension bushings, Sway bars, torsen bars,Shocks, you name it in the suspension, New Front disc brakes, rebuilt rear drums, glass, seals, Wiring,
Basically everything but Paint & Insterments (which are coming)
I ditched the rear seats and went with a GT look...

One thing you'll learn VERY fast ... a tub may look nice, the paint may look nice, but the 356 is no ordinary car. It has multiple skins and requires a special hand to do repair work after an accident. Also, I guarantee that it has rust ... even if it has no rust, IT HAS RUST.

Yep- they all have Rust (mine does) and my 356 race car well - let's just say it is currently getting lighter in backyard of the shop...and leave it at that.
My cup car however has no Rust - it's just wrecked - but probebly will have some rust in the future.
It never sleeps - it never goes away - you just fight it and fight it

i bought a 90% rust free 912 5 years ago, floors and pans and body solid, just a few minor surface spots, and those are tiney. this winter i need to replace the whole front pan, infact i was gonna call pimms tomarrow, just need to find their number.
just wondering, how much would a total repaint cost, as well as fixing a few dings, do some lead loading in a few spots, and taking care of some small surface rust? ive been thinking about it lately and its somthin i wanna do in the next few years, when i can afford it (just need to figure out how much and how to swing it!)
also how much would it run to rechrome all of the window frames, bumpers, mirrors, door handles and decos?

well - it all depends on how extensive it is. - Sorry i sound like a doctor.
I would budget between 5-7K for little body work and a nice paint job.
if you need more extensive rust/body repairs - I would think 7-10K
getting it all right - 12-15K (at least)
chrome is expensive and runs anywhere from 1-3K depending on how bad (Pit's, etc) it is and how many peices - you can generally get a break on the cost if you take them all in together - Make sure you keep very good notes on what goes to the chromer - other wise you will be missing a few critical bits.
My 58' race car w/ extensive body work (some bondo), Aluminium door skins, hood and rear deck - will be about 20-25K that does include a roll cage though. This car is being done in Va. the other prices are what i know of Wa. body shop prices.
spendy esp. when you are footing the entire bill.

no worry about sounding like a doctor.. infact i feel that mechanics and body guys are doctors, and their work is a form a surgury. they repar damaged metal rather than tissue, and they do it with a precision only second to doctors. (and the cost can get into the same price range!)
as far as paint and body, i was guessing somewhere between 7-10, so i was close at least. chrome, i had no clue about. mine isnt pitted too badly, just scratched up, dull, and the chrome is gone in some places (wont shine up much at all).
i have (aside from the need to get a new pan), 2 dents that are rusting behind the hood, where the hood flew up on the previous owner, dents on the hood in the coresponding places, a few dings here and there, and rust 'popping up' in the same spot on both doors. i also have 2 holes in the passenge side door where i drilled holes for a passenger mirror when i was younger and much dumber. other than that she is solid (as far as can be seen with out stripping her.)

sounds like reasonable amount - if you do a good bit of the disassembly/assembly work you can shave some money off that as well.
My first car was a 69' 912 - loved it

Yeah, Harry, but what about those valve guides ... Glad to hear you got home in one piece, and I highly recommend looking into the December 03 edition of Excellence magazine when it pubs in October.
By the way, did you ever get hooked up at the Plain Dealer?
