1955 Speedster seen for sale..
Hello all!
I'm a 944 guy ,too, but just saw a Speedster this past weekend, in pretty good shape considering its age, for about $20,000 and wondered if that could be or if it was a replica. No return calls from the owner yet. It had a rollbar and some extra gauges in the dash so its certainly not original. I'd sell my soul for one of those babies if it were real!!
Any comments appreciated.

Hey I'm a 944,911 guy too...but anyone who loves Porsche has to love the cars that made them and the 356, 356 speedster, 550 spyder are those cars. I love the speedster...such a classic shape...its a shame that the speedster suffers from the "is it real?" complex. Anyway, about your "sighting"...more than likely its NOT a real one. Two no nos and alarms that go off is the extra holes in the dash and the roll bar. How close have you been to the car? Pretty much all you have to do peck on it with your knuckle...the fiberglass is a real thick material and makes a bigger thud noise. Another test is just look under the car...anywhere under the car will reveal many clues....such as a shortened frame (cut for kit), fiberglass markings and such. Easiest body part to spot as a "kit car" is the bumpers...most of them come with a fiberglass bumper with plastic trim. Some owners replace these with real bumpers which would be my choice if I owed a replica. If you get in the bonnet of the car thats usually where many replicas fall short too.
I stored a replica speedster for 1.5 years once for a friend. He encouraged me to drive it as much as I wanted....what a blast! I didn't care if it was real of fake...it was fun. So anyway, I treated it as one of my own, I washed it every weekend waxed it about every 3 months and really kept it clean until I sold it for him. My friend had become bored with the car and it needed to be freshened up...I guess he knew I couldn't let a car stand dirty?
Ok...enough ramblings...I think $20,000 is too much for a average shape replica..but it would be a bargain if its a real speedster. Please keep us updated on your find. Good luck....

Hello,
Yes, what has been said tells me that the car I saw was a replica. Very heavy thunk to the bodywork. Have'nt seen the car again, butg I did see another going through New Hampshire recently. Unfortunately, I couldn't stop but I would bet it was a replica also. I think the ral ones would go for way too much dough.

European Collectibles (www.europeancollectibles.com) usually have a few speedsters for sale...price is usually $45-75K. Everytime I go there I get tempted... <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" />

Hi Brian,
I'm a 944 guy and my 944S2 cab is a Kentucky car.
Factory speedsters come up advertised for sale regularly in Pano, generally upwards of $50K, depending on condition and restoration/originality.
Personally, I'd prefer a replica because I'm not sure I could justify driving a real one since they are literally, pieces of Porsche history. Some of the replicas are really nice cars. My favorite is the 550 replica from Beck Cars in California which costs around $22K NEW. Beck tunes them to even higher performance specs than the $400K original.

But Beck doesn't make the cars themselves. They're actually built in Sao Paulo, Brazil, by legendary replica-maker "Chamonix." This reputable outfit also makes a marvelous Speedster replica:

I'm curious as to what they sell for in Brazil, without intermediaries like Beck.
On another note, where in Kentucky? I lived there and bought the S2 before taking a job in the Caribbean and shipping the 83 here instead (lower import duties). Your story brought back memories because a friend in Louisville stored the S2 for a year and I've been storing it in Ft. Lauderdale until I figure out what to do with it, which is proving to be costly. My brother goes to U.K. so I might take it to Kentucky. What do storage units go for there? I'm paying way to much in Florida.
TIA

Luis...sorry for the late reply. To answer your question a storage building around here goes for about $60 a month. So how is the Carribbean? Good luck on your situation.
