944 Guy Needs Advice re: '62 356C Price? Issues?
Hello Guys,
Yesterday I found a '62 356C in superficially very good condition at a littel used car lot for sale. They are asking $13,900 OBO.
The car is Ivory (sorry, not familiar with 356 colors), seems very complete. The interior is very nice. New seemingly correct carpet, new seat upholstery (hiding rust?). I know that typically the original engine has been swapped for a VW engine on some of these cars...how do I tell? The car has an after market exhaut that exits below the bumpers on both side with two each exhaust pipes per side. Looks lame to me. Appears the stock exhaust is to exit through the factory bumper guard holes but it doesn't.
I did look for obvious signs of rust, bubbling, etc - none apparent. I looked under the spare in the front compartment and surrounding area - solid. Can't look under the carpet without asking to pull it up, didn't have the right clothes to crawl under. Is this car remotely in the ballpark price wise? Is a '62 C a good one? I have always liked the 356 but frankly, afraid of the tricks small used car lots pull. Please advise.

Hello, Dan,
This price is right if the car is right. SInce you're in Pasadena, there are tons of 356 owners and enthusiasts who would look at the car with you. I would absolutely recommend getting someone to check the car with you.
The 356 is a blast to own and drive. If the car isn't a dog, then get it. If it IS, then find another. Like I said, the 356 is a wonderful car!
You may want to check 356Registry.org for vendors in your area, or log onto the 356 Talk list, also available at the 356Registry site.
Best regards,
Bill
