Who makes the best 356 replicas?
I've got an '89 911 Carrera that only has about 10K miles on it, and I had to pay out the nose for it; therefore, I can't afford to buy my second dream car....a 356 convert.
I'm just curious if anyone knows who is among the best of the replica builders for these cars, which would allow for me to at least own one 'that I could afford'!
Help!

I have no personal experience with any but have heard that a company in Canada called "Intermeccania" make a speedster that is far and above the best.
Prices start at 25 or 30 thousand dollars and I've heard wait times can be close to a year - I may be wrong. They are build on a frame, not a vw pan.
What I found interesting is that they make a accurate speedster and a convertable D which is a little more livable with roll-up windows etc.
They're at intermeccanica.com and have a enthusiast site at .org.

David, if you are thinking of an open car, such as a Speedster, maybe you can go a "step" further, and look at 550 Spyder replicas? I searched the web and came up with a several hits.... There is one running around here. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Hey, I don't know your budget but be sure to check out late model coupes. You can get solid great driving 356s for under $20K, possibly with a sunroof. Cabs are going to get you up to the $30k range.
If you're not dead set on a speedster/cab, this is the way to go. If anything, I suggest driving one before making the final decision. I doubt that a fiberglass tub can compare to the handling of the real thing...
my 2 cents.

I'll have to ask one of my Cars and Coffee guys. He showed up in a coupe the other day that looked like a 58, with a Subaru Engine, and tranny in it. Water cooled, and even has air conditioning! Looks beautiful and just like a 356 both from the outside, and within the cockpit. Chassis is VW--and old enough that it never needs to be smogged in California (pre-74).

A few years ago I attended a car auction in Coconut Grove FL and was surprised to see practically no bidders and many unhappy sellers. I signed up to bid and bought a brand new Beck Speedster for $23K (they normally go for around $30K), with a 95hp VW engine. It was a blast to drive year round in South FL and the finish was decent. My only mods were a radio installation and installing a stealth electronic ignition. After two years of ownership I sold it for what I'd paid. No comparison to the real thing, but it was a fun alternative and the company was easy to reach and deal with regarding very minor issues I had during ownership.
