Wink looked into a 356 cockpit

when I was at the track this past weekend I peered into a 356's cockpit. While admiring its raw simplicity I noticed that the horn button didn't have a crest (see pic). But instead it was a profile of some greek goddess or something. Is there any significance to this? Or is it just a mod? Thanks in advance.

the familiar Porsche crest wasn't devised until around '52. prior to that, the "Golden Lady" was a popular emblem in Germany that owner's installed on their steering wheels, as was St Christopher. some put them on later model 356s.

i have st christopher on my key ring he was on a pendant that the bishop (my grandfathers cousin) gave my mom when she was a little girl. she said it was blessed by the pope. she gave it to me before one of my cross country trips (the last one i took).

(yet some how my 12 still caught on fire with st christopher on the key ring in the middle of the desert in utah 2 summers ago )

I will never remove it from my key ring though

Yes it's a St. Christopher with the Astrological Signs. Guess they were covering all the bases to be safe even in the "old days" BTW: The horn button is a dark blue with gold, not black as it appears in pictures. When we were shopping for it there were only 2 available, one in So.Cal. and one in the UK.

This is obviously a replica.

popular emblem in Germany
So in germany there was a "fad" where porsche (or any german car) owners replaced there button? I can see how st.chris represents christianity and good luck. But "the golden lady" is she just a female version for good luck? Or is there some other meaning/representation. It also raises the question of who made these buttons and where did people get them. Did porsche offer them? and why did people get them?

there were only 2 available
rjt I'm guessing your was original from that era. BTW That wooden wheel is very nice. rich and elegant.

Just thought it was funny that before the age of minivans and soccermomstrosities. Porsche thought of having a tv/sat-nav system in there cars. They were well ahead of there time.

Hahaha! - I would normally cry foul - but if you were to put a color CRT in there it would look like a Dick Tracey kind of car.......
