Help with Transaxle
Back ground:
My father-in-laws diff developed an issue in his '60 356. Upon inspection the ring gear bolts had sheered off (someone only used 4 of the 6 ring gear bolts). Luckily there wasn't any major damage aside from the carrier bearings.
Current Issue:
In the process of checking the backlash during setup I noticed that the pinion nut was loose. The only thing keeping it from coming off was the cotter pin. The pinion doesn't have any axial play. Seeing that I have never built a Porsche diff before (I have done others) I have the following questions;
1) Is there a crush sleeve? I don't believe so but wanted to check.
2) Is there any reason this is loose?
3) Is it supposed to be backed off after setting the preload?
4) Is it possible that shrapnel in the diff could have gotten caught in the gears and compressed something in the pinion set up? (reason I asked #1)
5) Insert any other questions here.
Thanks.

Go to www.356registry.org and, at the home page, find the link to the 356 talklist...subscribe (it's free and you don't need to be a member!) and post your tranny question online...average time for an answer is 15 minutes...great transmission specialists over there! Good luck...
