Default Is this worth it...

or am I naive' to even consider buying it?

The ad reads;

Selling my fun to drive "Outlaw" 356. This is an original 356 Cabriolet
that had the windshield posts cut off and a Speedster frame attached. I
have the original Cab windshield frame, tension rod, and mirror that were
removed in case you want to return it to a Cab configuration. Also have the bumpers. No clips or other panel replacement. Some patches on longitudinals covering small holes. Jack spurs still plenty strong enough to lift car. No other rust. Original unkinked hood. Has A hood handle, license plate light
and GT hood straps to add to the Speedster look. Tool kit.Wood wheel. All guages redone by Palo Alto Speedo. Some wiring needs finishing under dash.
Good running gear with strong engine with new Webers. No top bows. $27.5K.
Cheaper than buying a rusty project Speedster. Plus you get instant
gratification.

what do we have here? an unfinished Outlaw (is that redundant?), intended to be speedster-ish, that is based upon a B Cab. it is incomplete & its underlying condition is tbd. costly to finish, costly to return to original spec, w/ a great number of unknowns whichever way you go. & only $27.5K to start your project, w/ no basis to project cost-to-complete or eventual resale value.
for that much $, I'd seek a nice "no stories" B or C Coupe.
good luck!

Coupes are really nice but...I'd like a roadster. Sooo, that's why I'm asking. I've ordered "Buying, Driving, and Enjoying the Porsche 356". I'm still collating, but then why is this one,
http://wholesalecalifornia.com/62_sil_cab.html
priced at $35,000? I know I've got a lot to learn. This forum is such a great resource of experience. I appreciate your advice.

EDIT: Changed url Same vehicle but craigslist ad expired.

you are naive.. what would you do with it? Its a collection of parts to create an outlaw. If it speaks to you, fine.. if you even have to ask.. run! It certainly is not "finished" and would only require more piles of $$$.

Original, unmolested, numbers matching, open top, car prices are going through the roof. They aren't making them anymore.......

HOWEVER, that one is pretty darn rough......................

I thought a vehicle like this would be much a better choice than a Speedster Replica (I have already built and sold one of those). It is a Porsche, isn't it? It is a "driver" and not a rust bucket. I'm not talking restoration. I was thinking Speedster Outlaw.

My question was if it was worth the $27.5K the guy is asking.

Ratpack,
I can't compare a chop-top B outlaw vs a speedster kit. Too many "degrees of freedom" for my taste - apples & avocados. So, to be definitive, I wouldn't pay $27.5K (or anywhere near it), given what I know (mostly negative, from my pov).

However, I already own both open & coupe 356s, and my opinion is strictly my own. I can only tell you what I'd do - not what you ought to do. From my pov, this car can end up costing nearly as much as just going out & buying a good ole driver Cab (B w/ N motor). Not to mention the resale...

However, for fun, I'll speculate on a "best scenario" for your example. No one bites (guys w/ $ don't want that car, guys who want that car can't assemble the pile of cash...). Seller lowers price. A 356 restoration / race specialist low-***** him further. Seller finally bites bullet & lets it go. Shop builds car up for vintage racing or (possibly) as some flavor of outlaw for a wealthy maniac having unusual tastes (meaning he pays in advance) - maniac gets bill for $90K. good luck!

ps: there is no "book" on the value of this car - a single seller & single buyer make the market.

i would think about it this way
1) are you going to keep it an outlaw? if so then it is worth as much as it costs to get it where you will like it (27.5K + whatever it costs to spruce up, say 10-15K)
or
2) restore it back to CoA specs or very close i.e. redo the windshield and cab top correctly, repaint, etc. spend the 40K + to get it back to very nice condition and then make the keep or resell decision at that point with Cab values going up with the stock market and housing prices who knows it might make a great (cough) investment.
or
3) enjoy it as is for a few years, only putting what you need to into it and hope someone down the lines wants to do one of these things above to it at some point.

my 2 cents
