mb,
24381 is not an engine serial #. the best way to clarify the many #s stamped on a 356 motor is by their location. the engine serial # is located on the generator mounting stand, just above where "made in germany" is cast, facing the rear of the engine compartment.
if 24381 is on the case (facing upwards, on the left side of the split), then that is the case casting #. usually, the # to the right side of the split ids the engine type (616/1, 616/2, 616/7, etc.), & I seem to recall that occasionally the actual displacement is stamped there instead (1600), but I think that may be on engines installed in the 912 model (616/36 or /39), or for OEM replacement cases. I have a 356 1600 motor w/ 1600S stamped there.
I'm not familiar w/ the 701 #.
I believe 27244 is your tranny serial #. I can't recall the other sequence, but it may be an internal ZF # relating to type, build date &/or gearset.
I don't think I helped much, but if you wish to try to reintroduce that powertrain to its original chassis, the best place to offer it is the 356 registry, where it is much-appreciated and often successful for all parties. Best of luck!
