Mechanically it should bolt in fine. I have no idea how the gear ratios would fit the torque curve of the 356/912 engines (type 616). Trying to get all the oil lines and vacuum source to run it could be something else. VW used the same basic torque converter in Beatles in the late 60s - early 70s (Automatic Stick Shift the called it) so there may be componets available that allow you to run the the hydraulics and vacuum servo from a 4cyl engine.

As I heard, and I might be wrong, the Sportomatic tranny was available for the 911 only since 1968...it was an optional until 1977. I never heard of a 4 cy Porsche engine equipped with such option.
I'd check with Vic Skirmants, the tranny Pope of the 356 world, whether or not there's some way to adapt the car to your needs...you can find Vic on the 356 registry's web site...good luck
PS. Tim...your above posting was the # 356 Congrats!!!

According to the last Excellence that featured the 914-6 sportomatic, there were a few 914-4's built with that transmission - but I doubt that would be easy car to find...

the sporto will not - bolt up to a 356 w/o major surgery to provide the front mount points for it (totally different) I have seen 911/912 5 speeds transplanted into C's but they usually also transplanted the entire rear suspension into the car.
not cheap and not reversable.
sounds interesting though -
sporto's are either a love or hate thing - although they did race them (rally) with some sucess.
i would not be suprised if a 912 was ever fitted with one - they were in production for a long time.
