Question New York DMV help on old plates

Anyone have any luck or personal experience researching old mid fifties plates to find original owners or car serial number information? I think I have spotted what may be my Speedster "80034" in a photo on page 51 from Randy Leffingwell's Porsche Legends book. My guess is it was owned by a salesman perhaps from the Hoffman dealership. Any help or info appreciated. I have downloaded the forms from NY DMV but they don't indicate a high percentage for a positive result.

There was an effort to locate all known speedsters a few years ago for the 50th anniversary of their introduction... not sure of the author of the book. Also, check for your VIN on www.356a.com
