Default 356C # 129841 For sale in my neighborhood

Hi everyone...

I just found an interesting car for sale close to me. Actually David, the
guy who recently bought my car, found it on Cars.com and asked me to check
for him...

As double coincidence the owner works out with one of my friends and we
share the same mechanic.

Owner has 3 more Porsches, two 911s and one 914, all set to vintage
racing...he has been using the 356, just like myself, as winter daily driver
and the car is kept in the garage during the summer.

I went there to check the car and although his girlfriend blocked the garage
with her car and she wasn't available to remove, I could give it a first
look and take a few pictures inside the garage.

Description: Slate grey/light grey interior
Paint is original and as ugly as it gets...floor pans were replaced mid 80s
and look firm and well done...no rust...the battery tray has rust and will
need a replacement...the worst rust area is the lower door area...both doors
(lower) actually are rotten by rust. The gaps are surprisingly good, the
hood closes smoothly and has a beautiful gap...engine lid and doors as
well...mechanically (I did not drive the car yet) this car must be really
sound as Manolo, my mechanic, takes care of it as he races vintage cars with
the owner and is always available for preventive maintenance...this car has
been spotted for friends several times this past winter...it has not been
sitting...it's an original driver and has been its entire life. Interior:
Seats are decent, no tears...headliner is gone, big tear! They included two
more gauges to the dash...a shame!!!

Engine: Probably original # 713571...tranny: I could not check #

The Good: The owner has the car for 5 years and he bought it from the
original owner in Florida...previous owner got the car in Germany (European
delivery) and had it for 35 years. New owner inherited a huge amount of
records since delivery in Germany including a business car from the
salesperson who sold the car, the first FL registration, taxes paid for
importation...the whole enchilada!

Accessories: Tool kit (missing the screw drivers)
Traveling kit (I never saw one before) I have to check if it's complete...it
has valves (2), clutch cable etc...all just like left Germany.
Lietz rack: not installed in the car but there.
12volts: This car left factory with 12v electric system and I did check on
invoice...it's original.

Bottom line: It's an ugly car with no structural rust but definitely in need
of some body work (mainly doors), beautiful gaps, terrible paint and tons of
accessories and documentation...it's a pleasure to see the history pieces he
has from the car's life...

Well...owner wants $15k and I'd be available in case some fellow enthusiast
gets interested. Please contact Saul, the owner, direct at:
racer914@bellsouth.net He is a nice guy and I'd love to help this car (with
fantastic documented history) goes to a good home and get restored!

Hi JoAnne...it definitely is a huge project...maybe for someone with spare time, garage space and metal skills...the cool part of the car is the extensive records and historical pieces since 1964...receipts from everything from the beginning...I would say he has more than $4k in accessories such as Tool kit, Traveling kit, Lietz luggage rack and NOS spare parts...

A lot of work indeed Norb...not for the faint of heart or busy professional...a good chalenge for the skilled metal man with some 356 knowledge though...the history around this car is great...you check the records and they take you back to Germany 1964...well...it's too much work for me and if you get someone to do it for you, probably the cost would be a way over the car's value...anyway, I'd love to see it restored...

The best route to buy these cars is either in very good to mint condition
or already restored. You will pay more money up front, but its worth it.
2 years ago I purchased a 1961 356B T5 that needed restoration,
made a big mistake! Was very time consuming and "surprises"
popped up no and then. Of course I the most impatient person
in South Florida, so I just sold it this past March.

Nice post, but I think the owner is slightly out of touch with reality if he wants $15K ;-)

i love slate gray, my all time favorite porsche color.

im with greg, the owner needs to come back down to earth (or at least come down quite a bit on the price)

I think he could easily make $5K selling the tool kit, traveling kit, Lietz rack and spare parts on eBay and then sell the car itself for $10k...but it would be a shame...

The market will say whether or not price is unrealistic...

No affiliation...I'm just helping a car to find a good home and hopefully get restored...

any interest or offer please direct to the owner, Saul...at: racer914@bellsouth.net

Yea that's a bit much, Pedro was selling his 356 in the mid 20's, and can tell you that that car is going to need more than $10K of work to make it as good as Pedros old car.

A Cabriolet in this condition would be a great buy at 15K, but not a coupe. Maybe 8, or 10, tops.
But......Coupes are going up in value all the time. I think the days of "coupes aren't worth restoring" are over. The real "reality" is that ALL 356s are worth restoring! Speedsters, Cabs and Roadster prices are going, going, gone! And they have and still are bringing the coupes up along with them. There are still some pretty decent 356 Coupes for under 20 grand that need some work and TLC. But the real sweet Coupes are going for 40 plus. I have a friend that is PISSED at me for selling our 65 C Coupe for 36K. He told me "that I gave it away". Oh well!
The bottom line is "They ain't makin' these things anymore" so we gotta preserve them and restore them and DRIVE them.

Hi Norb...I'd say this car would take $20K to be like the car I just sold...on the other hand, if you do part of the work yourself, you could save a bit and get a truly documented, original, unmolested 356. It's a work of love...maybe someone will loke at this ugly duck and decide to give it a break and make it shine...I'm a romantic...sue me! ;- )

Hi Robert...I sold my car in 12 hours...I had to hold it for inspection for 3 weeks but it was sold already...maybe I could get a little more but I think the price was fair and the business is good when it's good for both sides...kind of good "Karma" thing...I believe your price was as fair as mine...maybe we could get a little more but after all we are not dealers...just Porsche lovers...

Take care

Default Prices

I am still "Shocked" at those price, considering I sold my 65C for $14500 last year or so, ok maybe 18months now....Compared to this car it was a concours winner ;-) No a bit of rust, great mechanicals, just tired paint. I could probably sell it for 25 today! But, I did make a friend in the process, brought anothergood guy to the fold, and this is worth something too ;-) Besides the Porsche gods repaid me 6 months later with a 14.5K 57 A coupe in similar shape (Ok, slightly less good body wise, but painted better, a wash).....

Lately - heresy - I've been eying 1950s Mercedes 190SLs for the missus, same year as my 356, but those things have also gone up like crazy and are as much of a pain in the *** to restore ! Getting too rich for me.... Those old cars are a goddam addiction !

Know of one < 30K ? ;-) Rust free ?
