Default loose throttle linkage

Picked up my car about a week ago and finally had a chance to play with it a little bit The first problem I encountered was the throttle linkage. I can’t get the car to go past 65 mph on the freeway and overall the acceleration is just terrible. The link under the car is just way too loose. When the pedal is fully pressed, the carb only opens about 1/4 way. Should I have a shop adjust the linkage or try to do it myself and if it’s for the pros, can someone recommend a shop here in S. Orange County. Thanks

By all means, try it yourself first ! The only tricky part is to ensure both carbs are getting the same input at the same time, but it sounds like your slop is before that, between the pedal and the engine compartment ! Tighten away, you're not gonna hurt anything ! And when done, have someone (engine off) jam the pedal to the floor and make sure that you got full deflection in the engine. On another car I got back 20hp that way ;-)

Sorry it took so long to answer part of your question, but I thought Robert was going to jump in here. Alas, with his dislocated rib he's not doing much of anything right now......

When we lived in Orange County we took Helga (our '65) to Gary Cooper in Huntington Beach. I don't know if he is even in business anymore because the last time we saw him 5 years ago he was talking about retiring. He ran a one man shop and worked only on 356's since they were new.

Also there is Jack Staggs, and he is an excellent 356 mechanic. We have many friends that use him. He is in San Clemente. His phone number is (949) 492-9606

Hope this helps,
JoAnne

I'll second staggs. great reputation, and really nice guy. used by several in the 912 registry, and he is one of the guys who always gives the tech discussion at the 912 rendezvous every year

Jo, if you know staggs, youre going to be heart broken and shocked to hear this. staggs, well he cut his hair.. he found a woman and she tamed him.
gone is the wild man we all once knew.
