AEM UEGO Install. Am I really running this lean at idle? Update: Blink'r Testing
This install started as a spin off from another thread:
I wanted more information on how my car was running, so I installed an AEM UEGO AFR meter.
The sensor in installed on the unused second bung on my x-pipe, right across from the primary 02 sensor
First reports seem to show me running very lean at idle. This video shows typical with engine warm:
I looked at these threads:
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...ego-users.html
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...an-on-wot.html
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-o2-setup.html
and there seemed to be some indication that different power taps can cause issues. The video shows my gauge running from power tapped from cig. lighter. I also tried temporary straight to battery, and it did not seem to help.
So:
1. Am I really that lean, or;
2. Am I seeing some type of power issue, or;
3. Other?
Secondary question: I left the sensor cable at full length, coiled up in console. It about 8 feet longer than I need. Is it okay to shorten this cable?

As I understand it, the AEM unit requires no free air calibration. Per the instruction guide " Each AEM UEGO us individually calibrated.......this process replaces the traditional 'free air' calibration procedure when changing sensors........."
Correct me if wrong.

well, id guess you are running that lean. if direct battery power did not change the reading, then lean it is! check timing, fuel filter all the usual suspects. but im sure more people will chime in

Thats what scares me.
No way to tell how long it has been this way and what damage may be already done.
On the other hand, you would think I would be getting better gas milage than I do.....

Where is the unit grounded? Try a different ground....both Electromotive and Innovate were really cautious about getting a proper ground, otherwise incorrect readings would/could occur. Not familiar with AEM so it may not be an issue with yours.

Other than a missfire from running too lean, you will not damage anything at idle. If the sensor is on one of the downpipes then you are only monitoring one bank.

Perhaps get your hands on another wideband unit and see if it gives you the same readings. If so, then you know for sure it is running lean, and not a AEM unit issue. I know it is not the most practical but...

Confirming against another unit would be useful.
And, to Imo000's point, so far this only testing at idle on stands in my garage, but if the numbers are right, doesn't it show an issue of some type, whether lean idle causes real damage or not?
I'll post resultss from an actual drive when available.

#1 thing when it comes to wideband readings is.........how does the car run???? If the answer is fine, with no other symptoms then look at the wideband....
The readings as you increased RPM seems normal.....what is your idle RPM.....it could be high due to a vacuum leak? It should be around 650rpm.

Car actually runs very well. Solid idle, higher than 650, but I have a Porken chip. Only issue is that it stalls coming out of idle when run very hard ( see this thread ). Regular driving, it always purrs.
I am going to hunt for leaks. I also have new injectors sitting on my bench and a new 02 sensor on the way from Rog. FPR is fairly new. No reason to suspect a bad fuel pump, but can't rule it out.
Installing this AFR meter is the perfect example of "Be careful what questions you ask, you may not get the answer you expect "

Yes, that reading is real. No, it's not a big deal. You won't damage anything running lean at idle. AEM is a much better wideband than Innovative and doesn't require a free air calibration. Could be EGO, IAT, CLT, or MAF. Any of them could make that happen. Unless you can monitor them real time you'll never know.

Is it straightforward to use the AEM with the Shark Tuner?
