‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Clashes with Formula One in Porsche GT3 Dogfight
Cruise battles David Coulthard and Mark Webber in a GT3 dogfight to see which is the top gun at the racetrack.
Top Gun: Maverick is finally in theaters, and it has received rave reviews. The latest Porsche 911 GT3 has received just as many rave reviews since its release. Of course, it is a lot easier to get into the movie than it is the seat of a GT3. But if you are still fighting for a GT3 allocation there is good news. Apparently, all you need to do is become a Formula One driver or Tom Cruise and you should be all set. Mark Webber, and David Coulthard partake in an epic GT3 dogfight against Cruise around the Silverstone circuit. It is a mashup of racing, flying and Hollywood fantasy.
Even if you have yet to see the new movie, if you have been a Porsche fan for more than five minutes you surely know the connection the original Top Gun had with Porsche. That relationship continues in the new film. And as a result, it makes sense that the star of the film should “battle” a couple of pro drivers in the Porsche the looks the most like an airplane. This clip was originally released a few months ago but Channel 4 Sport recently posted it on their YouTube channel to correspond with the movie release.
Opening Act
Channel 4 presenter Steve Jones joins Coulthard in a Shark Blue GT3. They start with a leisurely spin around the track with the Top Gun theme playing in the background. After a short time, Webber pulls up alongside in his Gentian Blue GT3. While arguing over which one is the wingman a silver GT3 blasts between the both of them. It is Cruise in the silver GT3 who introduces himself by using some of the most quoted lines from the original movie.
Dogfight
Cruise blasts off into the lead but it is all a ploy to bring the F1 drivers in closer so Cruise can hit the brakes and watch them go right by. At that point Cruise goes on the attack. He gets a lock on the other GT3 cars and the PDK paddles become triggers. Let’s be honest, this is just an excuse to watch two former F1 drivers and one of the best-known actors in Hollywood just shred the tires of a GT3 around a racetrack. How can your inner 10-year-old not love watching that?
That ‘Loving Feeling’
Webber and Coutlhard sure can drive. But singing might not be their strongest suit. After the GT3 dogfight ends everyone begins to sing The Righteous Brothers hit You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ which you will of course remember from the movie.
