There is something amazing about being able to get a sneak peek into Porsche’s secret warehouse in Stuttgart. The car collection found there is one to shock any enthusiast. While not all of these cars might be available on display at the nearby Porsche Museum, we get to see some of these amazing vehicles in this video. The best part about these particular cars is they have been hand-picked to demonstrate which of these dozens upon dozens of Porsche models are the loudest.
As you might imagine, this is a tough call as there is so many options. However, the video shows us a variety of models from different eras and time periods to compare. To be honest, we were just excited to see them fire up some of these classic vehicles, regardless of how loud they are. Thanks to Porsche on YouTube, we get to see the Top 5 loudest models available in the warehouse.
5. 1978 3.0L 911 SC “Safari”
Coming in in “last” place is a classic air-cooled rally car. While this car might be last on the list, we are certain that a fly-by by this car would make us go deaf temporarily. It registers 122.9 dB on the sound test, 20+ dB more than a stock 991 GT3 RS. Yes, its that loud. For example’s sake, anything above 120 dB actually becomes painful and can cause damage to the eardrum, even in short exposure.
4. 996 991 RSR
This stunningly beautiful endurance race car is no joke when it comes to pure noise. It registered 123.4 dB on the sound test, all while shooting flames out the back. If that doesn’t count for style points, we don’t know what will. Not only is it loud, but it sounds amazing and is unmistakably a racing icon.
3. 928 “Trigema”
Porsche’s grand tourer brother to the 911 earns a spot in the top 3. Considering there is a V8 powering this beautiful race car, would this be considered cheating? We don’t think so. This 928 comes in at 126.4 dB. There are few things louder than a V8. However, we still have two more to go.
2. 804 Formel 1
Is it even fair to put up a classic Formula 1 car up against production-based race cars? This flat-8 powered beast from the 1960’s is unapologetically loud. Coming in at 137.8 dB, this is nearly as loud as hearing fighter jet take off while being on a flight deck standing next to it.
1. 911 Carrera RSR Turbo 2.1
Well, this is the top dog. We’ll be honest, we were surprised to see a turbo car at the top spot. Turbos usually function like mufflers because they get in the way of exhaust flow by design. This is obviously not the case for this glorious vehicle. At this point, the hosts finally put on some protective earmuffs. We are glad for them because otherwise they wouldn’t be able to hear ever again. This Turbo comes in at a whopping 138.1 dB to round up the top.
