1991 Porsche 911 Turbo

This 1991 Porsche 911 Turbo is beautiful, but would you choose it over the much faster and more modern 2023 911 Turbo S?

There are not many things in the automotive world more achingly beautiful than a classic Porsche 911 Turbo. And this 1991 Porsche 911 Turbo currently for sale at Porsche Woodland Hills in Los Angeles, California certainly qualifies. The most famous of these 964 Turbo cars is probably the one used in the original Bad Boys film. The scene of that black 911 Turbo racing the Shelby Cobra down a runway is burned into my mind and is something I can watch over and over again without complaint. These cars have rocketed in value the last several years, and that movie car selling for $1.3 million in January 2022 didn’t hurt. Looking at this car through that lens it seems to be a bargain. But an asking price of $324,339 without any movie provenance is still a staggering sum of money.

The 1991 Porsche 911 Turbo came with a 3.3L flat six turbocharged engine that made 320 horsepower. The 1993 and 1994 model year cars got a larger 3.6L engine making 360 horsepower. But even the lower powered cars such as the one for sale here were not exactly slow. They could hit 60 mph in about 4.8 seconds and top out at 168 mph. Impressive stats for 1991. That being said, a 2023 911 Turbo S or even a base Turbo would simply destroy the 964 model in any performance contest you care to dream up. Heck, a base 4-cylinder Cayman today would run neck and neck with the mighty 964 Turbo. So why in the world would you pay this much money for one? Why not just get the newest Turbo S for the same price?

Advantage 964 Turbo

964 Turbo

A new 911 Turbo S starts at $232,050. But after you add in a few options and factor in the dealer markups that are still being applied to these cars the out the door price is just about even with the $324,339 Turbo being sold here. But the 964 is a rare car. When was the last time you saw any 964 on the road, let alone a Turbo? And it is not just the rarity, it is the specialness of the 964. It was the last air-cooled 911 Turbo. The 964 Turbo is offered with a 5-speed manual transmission. PDK only in the new car. The 964 is about 350 pounds lighter than the modern car.

The 964 doesn’t have all the electronic gizmos the new car has. A 964 is one of the last 911 Turbos that you really had to know how to drive to get the most out of. It has a charm and appeal that can’t be matched by the modern cars. It might not be the fastest on the road anymore. But it is one of the coolest.

Car for Sale

Interior

This particular 964 Turbo has an interesting history. The selling dealer offers very little information considering they are trying to sell such an expensive car. Mileage is low at only 50,398 indicated. According to the Carfax the car spent the first 14 years of its life in Ohio. But then the next 17 years were spent in Canada, before coming back to the United States. It is also interesting to note that this car has been offered for sale for nearly an entire year. Does the dealership really want to sell it? The car has a clean title but there are no service records listed. If you are looking at this car, be sure to ask for the service history.

Also, it is always a good idea to get a PPI done by a shop you trust. And be sure to check those tire date codes! I bought two vintage cars this past year. One car was rolling on 8-year-old tires and the other on 13-year-old rubber. Both were well past their prime, and it is something that folks can easily overlook.

New or Old

3.3L

So, assuming you have the money for either this 964 or a new Turbo S which would you go for? You can’t have both, so do you get the modern rocket ship that is one of the fastest accelerating gasoline powered cars you can buy? It is more efficient, comfortable, has a warranty, more safety features, and so on. But it is a bit sterile when compared to the 964 Turbo.
