Something Isn’t Right About This SEMA ‘993’?

There is something that just looks off about this 993 that we spotted at SEMA this week. It’s obviously got a strange body kit on it, and perhaps the body has been widened as well. The hood shutlines certainly don’t look right, and the fenders seem more laid-down than usual. Can you tell at first glance what’s going on here, or do you need a double or triple take to figure it out?

It doesn’t look right because it isn’t actually a 993 at all, it’s an FD3S-generation Mazda RX-7 wearing a pair of Porsche 993 Litronic headlights. Currently sitting in SEMA’s show hall is this wild car called “RE Super G,” built by the legendary Japanese rotary engine tuning company RE-Amemiya. They’ve been tuning Mazda rotaries in the Chiba prefecture of Japan since well before I was even born. They’re well respected among those in the know, and they’re accustomed to building wild, attention-grabbing cars like this one. It’s fair to say that their theory is working, it definitely grabbed our attention.

The thing is, RE-Amemiya has pulled this 993 fake-out in the past. For their wildest cars, they have a tendency to pull out the Porsche lights to make them stand out. The headlight assembly itself is actually quite attractive, so it’s hard to blame them for re-purposing something that is already great.

For comparison’s sake, here’s a shot from a while back of another RE-Amemiya car featured in Turbo & High Performance Magazine.

And in 2013, to celebrate the company’s 35th anniversary, they also built the Lotus Europa featured in the video below, with a 20b rotary in the middle and, of course, 993 headlights. You can see more photos of this car over on Speedhunters.
