Someone Bought a 2017 911R at Auction for $532,500

At Bonhams’ recent “Zoute Sale” in Belgium, one car collector made the cash-in decision of a lifetime. With a brand new Porsche 911R, purchased just a handful of months ago for a paltry $200,000, the owner more than doubled his money by selling the car at auction.

Bonhams says that the car had significant interest worldwide, as there were online bids, nearly a dozen phone bidders, and another 30 interested parties in the room during the auction. This is the first 911R to sell publicly since the car was launched earlier this year.

Being that only 991 of the special edition Porsche models would be built, it’s no surprise that the car sold for significantly more than MSRP. Porsche promised 911R production on a right-of-first-refusal basis to 918 Spyder owners, and nearly all of them agreed to purchase one of these instant money-makers. For people who don’t own a 918, but want a 911R, it would seem that paying a massive premium at second-hand auction is the only method available.

As it stands, only about half of 911R production has been completed, and even fewer have been delivered. Surely you’re aware by now, but in any case the 911R features a GT3 RS 500-horsepower, 4.0-liter engine in a narrow-body GT3 chassis mated with a 6-speed manual transmission. The car’s styling is intended to evoke the original 1968 911R, a true racing car.

What do you think, is a 911R worth half a million dollars?
