Rumor Has it That Porsche Will Reveal a New Model, June 8

New model

Nothing has been confirmed by Porsche yet, but the prevailing theory is that the new model will be a modern day 911 ST.

Porsche collectors rejoice! There is about to be another special limited edition 911 model that you can park in your garage and never drive. The new model at this point is not confirmed by Porsche. We are going off what Road and Track is reporting was said on Spike Feresten’s podcast recently. Feresten mentioned that an unnamed source said that Porsche is planning to reveal a new product on June 8.

This new product is reportedly a new model that has not yet been talked about by Porsche. There have been swirling rumors for some time that a modern 911 ST may be on the way. I mentioned this 911 ST possibility a year ago when I wrote about all the special edition Porsche vehicles you can’t buy. And it looks like there will be another special one to add to the list.

Whatever the model will be what we do know is this. The car will be produced in limited numbers. It will be expensive. It will sell for probably double MSRP. And it is likely already sold out by the time you read this as special models like this go to the same inner circle of buyers as every other one.

If you already own a Sport Classic, a new GT3 RS, and have a 911 Dakar on the way, then chances are you will be getting this new model as well.

911 ST

The original 911 ST was built in extremely low numbers in the early 1970s. These were lightened and fortified cars that we were built for only one purpose. That was to win races. When the FIA announced it would allow wider rear wheel arches Porsche jumped on the opportunity to stuff wider wheels out back.

The problem was Fuchs didn’t make wheels wide enough. Which is why if you look closely, you will see the wide body cars have Fuchs up front but Minilite wheels out back. If Porsche does make a modern 911 ST, I would love to see them recreate this mixed wheel-set look.

Modern Version

The Sport Classic combined a 911 Turbo engine with a manual transmission and some heritage styling. The 911 ST would likely combine the GT3 engine, with a manual transmission, heritage styling and some weight reduction measures such as extensive carbon fiber.

This car will likely mark the end of the 992.1 generation cars. And it would be a fitting send off indeed. And as a heritage car it will likely come with such baubles as the Heritage Design badge and a Porsche Design watch.

356/1

June 8

On June 8, 1948, the first Porsche 356 was completed and received its street certification. So, for Porsche to launch a new model on June 8 would have some historical meaning. Especially if that model is a throwback such as the 911 ST. Maybe Porsche will surprise us and announce that the new model will be a simple roadster just like that very first 356.

Something built off the current 718 platform that is stripped down to the essentials would be a cool option for a new model being launched on this date. But that is unlikely.

The sad thing is that if they do build a racing inspired 911 ST it will be the car least likely to ever see a racetrack. The new owners will tuck them away and watch them appreciate in value like a fine wine.

Too bad. Because in 1970 a 911 ST was built to be driven hard and pushed to its limit. In 2023 it is built to be collected and babied so the already wealthy owner can make even more money on it when it is sold five years later with only delivery mileage on it.

Oh well. I am sure it will still be a cool car to read about.
