Porsche Cayenne GTS Manual Transmission

Cayenne GTS is one of just 33 in the United States with the manual transmission.

When Porsche began offering the Cayenne, many enthusiasts scoffed at the idea of a big sport utility vehicle from the company that was made famous for small, lightweight sports cars. While some fans of the brand rejected the Cayenne, most consumers did not and it quickly became the bestselling model from the Porsche brand. After a few years, the company wanted to attract more performance-minded shoppers who had a tighter budget and the GTS trim level was created.

911 Spirit in a Big SUV

The Cayenne offered some buyers the chance to get into a Porsche for the first time, allowing them to experience the brand’s luxury in the “base” and “S” models while the Turbo and Turbo S both focused on big performance. In 2008, Porsche introduced the GTS to bridge the performance gap a bit between the S and Turbo, adding 20 more horsepower and a sport-tuned suspension setup, but the biggest news for the GTS was the transmission.

The 2008 and 2009 Cayenne GTS was offered with a 6-speed manual transmission, adding some extra sports car feel to the roomy SUV. As you might imagine, not many buyers of an SUV wanted a manual transmission, but over the course of those two years, 134 Cayennes were equipped with the third pedal.

If you act quickly, one of those 134 could be yours. A member named “ProducerJohn” posted his 2009 Cayenne GTS with a manual transmission for sale and this has to be one of the nicest 10-year-old SUVs we have seen.

Extremely Rare

Porsche sold lots of Cayenne GTS models over the few years that they were offered. According to this thread in the forum, Porsche North America claims that roughly 15,700 units were sold from 2008 through 2010. One member speculated that roughly 3% of all units had the manual transmission, but a member named “GTS Red” shared the actual numbers.

I received from Porsche North America, the below numbers regarding the “Sold in US” numbers for Manual Transmission GTS Cayennes;

2008- 101
2009- 33
2010- 0

Based on this information, only 134 of 15,700 Cayenne GTS units had the manual transmission and only 33 of those were made for the 2009 model year. That makes this black SUV extremely rare, but it is also extremely clean.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
