Question of perception gives a 911 enthusiast a moment to hesitate on buying a luxury item during a trying time for many.

The world is in a very interesting place right now. A great number of us are affected by the pandemic, but a certain number have also been able to ride out the storm. For those who have the means, treating yourself is fully justified. With so many unknowns in the world, you may as well do something that makes you happy, right? Well, one Rennlist user has an interesting topic for us to discuss: public perception.

Without a doubt, Porsche owners are a unique breed. Loyalty to the brand is high among traits, but passion for motorsports, fascination with engineering follow close behind. But Marantz2270 found out that to other people, Porsche owners come off as “materialistic, insecure, flashy, attention-starved.”

In every form of the car market, there’s people who wear a badge as a personality trait. Porsche is no different from the rest, but the forum responses showed how Rennlist users truly feel. Forum user TheStanman hits on this point:

I think it totally depends on the type of person you are. Anyone that knows me, knows I drive a 911 because it’s a genuine passion.

If someone isn’t in to cars and gets a Porsche to wear it like a piece of fashion, then it’s a bad look. I do not surround myself with people like that.

This passion for the car and what it can do is a recurring theme throughout the rest of the thread. Mozella55 shows how it can be a mind game that others want to play. from their post they write, “Get away from people (girlfriends or otherwise) who judge you by the car you drive and stop worrying about it so much. It ain’t healthy. Worry about important things like tire pressure and oil viscosity and how often you really need to stir risotto………….. you know…………..stuff that really matters.”

As far as flaunting wealth, we also see that most of our members are actually quite philanthropic, too. Mercuriell writes, “I inwardly cringed when I drove by an unemployment line of people put out of work by Covid and I won’t drive it to work. Irrational I know – I have worked long and hard and go out of my way to help the less fortunate.” Plus, they weren’t the only ones to echo such a statement.

So while some people might perceive the brand and its users as a little bit aloof, it only take a simple conversation that can truly tell the story of Porsche owners being a great community.
