Right-hand drive 930 comes in Guards Red, one of the few final 930s to have the G50 five-speed manual.

Do you remember 1988? George H.W. Bush was chosen to be the 41st President of the United States. Rick Astley proclaimed that he’d never give you up, INXS needed you tonight, and Bill Murray put his spin on A Christmas Carol as the lead in Scrooged.

And of course, 1988 was also the start of the final year for the 930-era 911, like this example we happened upon while looking through the listings of Silverstone Auction’s happening at Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire, England, on May 10 and 11.

This particular 930 is a right-hand drive Targa Turbo in Guards Red, delivered to its first owner on October 20, 1988, and happens to be one of the few 911s at the end of the 930 era to come with a G50 five-speed manual. All that alone is enough to make it a rarity among its peers.

Out back is the 930’s 3.3-liter, chilling under the whale tail while laying down the law of the road, which mandates a smooth ride with the G50 handling the output. This particular setup has logged 71,725 miles in its long life, and is ready for several more.

And while the wind flows through your hair with the targa top off, the heated seats will keep you warm around the bends, and the sounds of Billy Ocean beckoning from the Blaupunkt stereo is truly music to the ears. We certainly know where’d we wanna be on a sunny day.

Rain or shine, this Guards Red 930 Targa Turbo makes us eager for the days when Die Hard was blowing away the box office, NASA’s space shuttles soared into the heavens again, and Bobby McFerrin told us not to worry and just be happy in a 930.
