Porsche 944 has an LS engine, a wicked widebody kit and a show-stopping cockpit.

The majority of display vehicles at the SEMA Show each year are American models, but there was a Porsche 944 at their year’s show that was sure to grab the attention of muscle car lovers. Displayed in the Racing Junk booth, this 944 has been heavily modified by Brian Bergeron from Widerstandsfahig, transforming it into the 948RS. Purists are sure to hate it, but if you can appreciate a cleanly-built Porsche project car with General Motors power, you should like this car.

You probably know that there is no such thing as a Porsche 948RS. This is actually a 944 that has been fitted with a V8, which owners refer to as a 948. However, this project was clearly more than just an LS swap, creating a proper SEMA Show display vehicle.

The most prominent feature of this Porsche 948RS is the widebody kit, which adds a ton of width at all four corners. These molded flares attach in a way that preserves the factory body lines under the flared wheel openings. There is a vent on the rear side of all four openings that allows us to get a good look at the massive tires tucked under all four corners. The body kit also includes a custom chin spoiler, side skirts and a huge rear diffuser extending out from under the rear fascia.

In addition to the 944 Turbo front fascia, this Porsche has aftermarket fixed headlights that eliminate the pop-up lights, along with a vented hood. Out back, the diffuser is joined by clear taillights and a big rear spoiler. This Porsche rides on HRE wheels wrapped in Pirelli rubber.

Race-Ready Cockpit

On the inside, this Porsche 948RS features modern racing-style seats with racing harnesses in an envionrment that is totaled decked out in black, blue and white. The black-and-white checked pattern found on the seat centers and door panels contrast nicely with the blue on the seat bolters, the dash, the door panels and the center console.

The gauges and the various switches on the dash have been cleaned up, but the basic factory layout has been maintained. With some blue leather, that classic dash design looks brand new in this custom Porsche. The cabin is completed with a roll bar that fills the area under the hatch.

LS Power

Finally, this Porsche 948RS is powered by some variant of a General Motors LS engine. We don’t know what engine this is, nor do we know how heavily it has been modified.

LS Engine

We would guess that it is pretty stout, but it is naturally aspirated, so this isn’t likely to be a monster power car. Fortunately, in this lightweight Porsche with huge tires, this 944-turned-948RS should be a beast on a road course.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
