Porsche has a long and impressive history. But it was truly in the late 1960s that the automaker came into its own, tearing up the race track with cars that built to innovate and dominate the sport. At a recent visit to the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, Rennlist took in some Porsche’s finest and most historical race cars. This 1967 Porsche 910 is a racer crafted for speed, and destined for greatness.

Based on the Porsche 906, the 910 was made to be a superior racer, and it delivered. It won its class at the 1967 Targa Florio, finished 9th at 24 Hours of Le Mans, won the 1967 and 1968 European Hill Climb, championships, and dominated Nürburgring in 1967 with Porsche taking each of the top four places.

The sleek, curvy, and purpose-built racer had a 2.0-liter Flat 6, which made about 210 horsepower, and reached top speeds of 165 mph. It was the first Porsche race car to employ 13-inch wide tires like those used in Formula 1 racing. The 910 had an advantage against other cars with its superior ability to corner.

Sadly, the 1967 Porsche 910 was only on the circuit for one year, with only 29 produced, as Porsche was ready to test out new technology. However, the 910 had already secured its respected spot in racing history.
