Porsche ‘Track Your Dream:’ An Exciting, Yet Agonizing Experience

Track Your Dream

Porsche’s ‘Track Your Dream’ service has been in place for a couple of years now. What has it been like?

Hard to believe, but it is almost exactly twenty years since I ordered my first new Porsche built to my specifications. It was a “Guards Red” Base Boxster that I ordered in March 2003. I was beyond excited. I must have read the Boxster brochure 100 times while I waited. And at the time my salesman told me that I could track the cargo ship it was on for the trip across the Atlantic.

I thought that was so cool, and I did enjoy tracking that journey. But beginning in 2020, Porsche introduced a brand-new service called “Track Your Dream.” This goes far beyond getting status code updates from the dealer and tracking a cargo ship. You not only get milestone updates, but you receive pictures of the car you ordered getting built. As if the anticipation wasn’t already almost too much to bear.

At this point, Track Your Dream has been in place for a couple years. Originally available for just 911 models, it has expanded to include the Taycan and 718 lines.

So, how has it performed so far? Does it make the process even more exciting? Does it make the wait even more frustrating when you see the car stuck at the same milestone point for a long period of time?

A recent Rennlist post by member nimski62 got us thinking about these questions. The post is titled: It’s finally happening!! Some production pics. The thread shows the journey of a new 911 Turbo S being born. It offers us a glimpse of how this service is working.

Let’s begin with the original announcement regarding this new service. “Buying a Porsche is a special moment, and one that should be as personal as possible, recognizing that placing the order and awaiting its delivery is part of the experience as anticipation builds. Porsche Track Your Dream allows our customers to trace every key stage of their new car as it leaves our home in Germany,” said Klaus Zellmer, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA). “This service gives future owners a convenient way of staying up to date before they see their car for the first time here in the U.S.”

Once you place your order you get a link that takes you to the platform and allows you to track your car. This includes photos at key milestone points of the build. You also get a countdown in miles and days showing how far away your car is from delivery. Exciting stuff.
