PDK Shift Cable Issue

Improperly installed PDK shift cable may prevent the transmission from locking in the park position.

Porsche is recalling certain 2024 Boxster and Cayman models due to an improperly installed PDK shift cable clip. Yet another reason to drive a manual transmission! The improperly installed clip can prevent the shifter from locking in the park position. If that were to occur it is possible that the car could roll away and cause a crash. That is the bad news. The good news is that only 14 cars are part of the recall. The affected cars were manufactured between July 6, 2023, and March 21, 2024.

According to the recall notice the PDK shift cable may not have been fitted correctly during off-line re-work process at the factory. The cable sheath may have been damaged during the re-work process. Porsche will fix the issue by installing a new shift cable and safety clip. Dealers will be notified on June 5 and owners will be notified on June 12. The notice did not specify which Boxster and Cayman models were part of the recall. However, it did include a VIN range and it seems to include a mix of base vehicles as well as GTS 4.0 models.

Problem Discovered

In April of 2024 Porsche was notified of two cases outside of the United States where the subject vehicle rolled away despite it being placed in the park position. No injuries were reported, but the cars both received body damage as a result of the crash. Porsche then determined that the vehicles had off-line re-work performed outside of the normal assembly process. Porsche found that it was during this process that the PDK shift cable was damaged or not installed properly.

Dealer Fix

Porsche will fix this issue for owners at no charge by installing a new shift cable and performing a pull test. Vehicles that have been reworked will go through a check on a roller to ensure that the Park function works. Owner notification letters will be sent out on June 12. Owners may also contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243. Porsche’s number for this recall is ARA7.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov. With such a small number of cars affected, the odds of your car being recalled are low. However, we encourage you to check your VIN to make sure it is not part of this campaign. If it is, exercise additional caution until you can get it repaired.
