Porsche Obsessed Designer Links Fashion and Fine Automobiles
Arthur Kar grew up fascinated with the NBA, MTV, and Porsche. And now, he combines all three of those passions into one career.
Since the very beginning, Porsche and style have gone hand in hand. And that’s truly what sets them apart, honestly. Porsche cars aren’t just fast and phenomenally fun to drive – they’re also quite appealing to look at. So it makes perfect sense that a famous fashion designer like Arthur Kar of L’Art de L’automobile drew much of his inspiration from cars, as we learn from this fascinating video from HYPEBEAST.
Kar’s love of, well, cars began early in his teens. “I’ve always been passionate about cars,” Kar said. “That gave me the chance to be a mechanic. What inspires me the most is to push the limits of car culture and make it more creative. Porsche has always been part of my story. There’s a particular shape which I like since I was young.”
The video catches up with Kar at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, where his youthful enthusiasm for the brand is clearly on display. He even jokes about how he wishes he had been pulled over on the Autobahn when he was younger by a 911 police car on display. But he also talks about how his love of MTV and NBA basketball formed an unlikely force to push Kar’s love of automobiles even further down the rabbit hole.
“Today I’m mixing both worlds because back then, I was falling in love with some sneakers. Because I was watching my favorite basketball players wearing them. That’s why I wanted to have the shoes. So it’s kind of the same with the cars. The Formula 1 racing drivers and all these racers. They were dressing cooler than today. That’s my inspiration for my brand.” And Porsche has also played a big role in Kar’s designs. He loves the Carrera GT so much, in fact, that he designed a T-shirt around it.
Watching Kar run around the Porsche Museum is, if nothing else, quite entertaining. His giddy enthusiasm for cars is clearly on display, and it’s a feeling that we all share. The only difference is, Kar funneled that passion into a unique brand that helps him continue to express himself on a grand stage.
