Spring/Summer 2020 Eyewear Collection of sporty sunglasses expands ‘Iconic’ series that was started by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche in 1978.

Granted, it’s been a tough couple of weeks for everybody since the world has changed and needs a little getting used to. If you’re like us here at Rennlist, you probably have been spending a lot of time online lately discovering new and fun ways to fill up your free time, like this recent Rennlist online find, and this one. Of course, we also spend a lot of time looking at cool Porsches, reading up on Porsche news, and planning all the stuff we’re gonna do as soon as life returns to the way it was and we can get out there and go for a long scenic drive down the nearest country road or head to the neighborhood mall or hit the hiking trails of the nearest city park.

It should come as no surprise that a lot of our free time is also spent on Porsche Design’s website because we have yet to see a Porsche-themed product on there that did not wow us with its out-of-the-box design, whether it’s ingeniously rethinking and then recrafting something as mundane as a pencil into a practical, functional woven stainless steel art piece. And even this gorgeously designed smoking pipe looks more like something you’d see in the Guggenheim than on Willie Nelson’s coffee table.

Porsche Design’s newest exclusive–its Spring/Summer 2020 eyewear collection–really stands out even among the stellar luxury products featured on the site. Plus, the sunglasses are part of Porsche’s “Iconic” series that was started by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche himself in 1978, when he created the P’8478, the world’s first sunglasses with interchangeable lenses – a style that is still being produced today in its original design and which has reportedly sold several million units.

Highlights of Porsche Design’s Spring/Summer 2020 Eyewear Collection include the new P‘8685 Hexagon sunglasses, which supplements the Iconic series. Also, the P’8478 (pictured below) appears in an exclusive new color, and elements of the limited Iconic series are revived in the new collection.

Available in a variety of designs, the new sunglasses mirror Porsche’s cool aesthetic and feature Porsche Design’s clean, crisp lines and gorgeous curves that are synonymous with the lifestyle brand’s purist design. And aside from looking stylish and badass, practicality is also a big part of the design, with special lenses that make the “Vision Drive” sunglasses much more exclusive.

Porsche Design calls its lens technology “Vision Drive,” with polarized lenses promising optical benefits for not only a better driving experience but also for everyday life. Each specific model offers specific functions and design and include:

The ‘Iconic’ Series

Porsche Design Hexagon
P’8685 – Hexagon

Limited to 911 pieces, the Porsche Design P’8685 Hexagon is the perfect fusion of the Porsche Design philosophy and the highest level of engineering skill. The masculine design is inspired by the engine block of a sports car: eight hexagon screws hold the front, which is milled out of solid titanium, and give the sunglasses a unique, striking look. The precision and stability of the construction are emphasized by the exclusive manufacturing process: each frame is screwed together individually and by hand. Light frames made of high-performance plastic RXP and polarized lenses ensure maximum wearing comfort.

P’8684 – Lasercut-inspired

Inspired by the Iconic Lasercut P’8663 from 2018, the P’8684 defines the look of the design pieces in the new collection. The flat lens shape of the aviator glasses distinguishes the striking and iconic style. The metal frame, made of high-performance plastic RXP, and cut-out elements in the front emphasize the unique material combination. The clean temple designs emphasize the straight-lined and purist
style.

Porsche Design - Porsche Design P'8693

P’8693 – Homage to the P’8479

Porsche Design introduced its trendsetting P’8479 sunglasses in 1979. Based on the classic design and now available in four colors, the new P’8693 features a metal bridge of contrasting color that runs along the top edge of the rimless glasses and is secured with hexagonal screws. The result is a very masculine, technical look that echoes of the fast and sporty aesthetic of Porsche’s legendary vehicles.

The newly released Porsche Design Spring/Summer 2020 Eyewear Collection is available in Porsche Design Stores, online, and at selected opticians.
