Carrera GT

Assuming you have seven figures to spend on a car, you could own this 2006 Carrera GT being offered by RM Sotheby’s.

A list of the most iconic, valuable, and desired Porsche road cars would not be complete without the Carrera GT. It deserves to be mentioned alongside the greats such as the 959 and Carrera RS 2.7. Born from a Le Mans prototype racecar, the Carrera GT is an astounding machine even twenty years after it was released. Only 1,270 examples were ever built, so you don’t see them on every used car lot. If you want one, and you have the means, you need to pounce on one if you see it pop up for sale. Well, get ready to pounce because RM Sotheby’s is auctioning one off at their Tegernsee Auction. The car is expected to cross the block on Saturday, July 27.

The pre-auction estimate for this car is $1,050,000 to $1,400,000. That is a hefty sum to be sure. But to be honest, I think you could make the case that this Carrera GT would be a bargain at that price. The 992 GT3 RS trades hands at nearly half a million dollars in the current market. And as amazing as that car is, the Carrara GT is far more special. Given the choice between the two, I would take the Carrera GT every day of the week. It can easily justify a price that is double or triple that of a new GT3 RS.

5.7L V10

Engine

Let’s name all the Porsche road cars that came with a V10 engine. Well, there is the Carrera GT with the 5.7-liter V10 that makes a smidge more than 600 horsepower. Alas, it is the only Porsche V10 road car in existence, and the dry sump engine in this car was designed to be a race engine. Due to rules changes, Porsche had to shelve the racing plans, but instead decided to use the platform to develop a road-going supercar.

Using a six-speed manual transmission with a wood shift knob, you could get the car to 60 mph in about 3.5 seconds and keep on going until you top 200 mph. Oh, and if you ever heard this engine rev in real life, you would be cashing in your 401k right now.

Special Bits

As if that engine is not special enough, the Carrera GT has a few more tricks up its sleeve. Carbon fiber is used in all sorts of cars today, but in the early 2000s it was still an exotic material. The Carrera GT is loaded with it from the monocoque and sub-frame to the brakes. Even the clutch is a three-disc carbon fiber unit that is about one third the size of a normal clutch.

It takes some practice to get used to the feel of that clutch and how to use it. But don’t let that stop you from buying the car. Lightweight forged magnesium wheels with center-locking bolts are standard on the Carrera GT. Those wheel bolts are color-coded to ensure the proper bolts were installed on the correct side of the car.

Interior

This Example

The nice thing about this Carrera GT is that the previous owners actually drove it a little bit. It currently shows 35,698 kilometres (about 22,181 miles). Not high miles, for an 18-year-old car, but a decent amount for a car like this. Hopefully, the new owner also enjoys it on the road and doesn’t just lock it up in a garage to dry rot. This car is a 2006 example finished in GT Silver Metallic with an Ascot Brown interior.

Since May of 2021, the car has received about $30,000 worth of service, including several new parts such as tires, battery, coils, plugs, starter motor and radiators. The current owner has had the car since November 2022.
