Porsche 930 Turbo

Ever since engineer Grant Karnes laid eyes on her, he coveted thisĀ 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo. Of course, as you can see in the Petrolicious video below, who wouldn’t?

Grant had always admired the 930 when it belonged to a family friend. When he died, Grant’s dad was given the opportunity to buy the car, which he smartly did. And then in 2007, with his father retiring, Grant finally bought the car from Dad.

Dream come true, right? Well, yes, but perhaps even dreamier than he’d first suspected. Not only was she a 930, the first turbocharged 911 and at one time the fastest German production car around, but she also had just about the best “problem” ever.

After more than a quarter of a century in existence, the car had barely 16,000 miles on it. “The only thing that I would say is that it probably hadn’t been driven enough,” says Grant. So to fix that, he drove it, gloriously so, for about a year and a half. Then it was time to get to work on her, and that’s when things got even dreamier.

ā€œI really had two objectives in the project,ā€ he says. ā€œOne was to really preserve the originality of the car and its ability to be returned to stock, and the second was that I really wanted to unleash the potential and see what the 930 was.ā€

Beneath that strikingĀ Martini racing livery — which is actually a magnetic graphic that’s completely removable — lies a tastefully and artistically modified beast of a 930. AndĀ Petrolicious, as they are wont to do, shows every bit of it off, with all the reverence she deserves.
