Mark Webber Flogs Porsche Mission E Around Weissach
We already know what the Mission E looks like. But what does it drive like? Thankfully, we now have some answers.
Mark Webber is quite the accomplished driver. The former F1 and Porsche 919 endurance racer has a host of wins and an LMP1 championship under his belt already. So as you might imagine, we were curious to see what Webber thinks about the all-new Porsche Mission E. Thankfully, Porsche was kind enough to share his impressions on the EV following a little spirited driving around their very own Weissach test track recently.
And suffice to say, Webber came away more than a little impressed. “I’ve got many Porsche moments that will stay with me forever,” Webber admits. “Winning the WEC in the 919 Hybrid would be one. And I think I’ve just experienced another. Driving the Mission E for the first time. It’s a game changer, this car. Quite literally, it is stealth in motion.”
High praise for an all-electric car, that’s for sure. But Webber takes things a step further, comparing the Mission E to two of Porsche’s greatest (and fastest) creations to date. “Still clearly a Porsche, it actually kept reminding me of the 919, as there were times were we could drive our Le Mans racer on E-Motor alone. The gorgeous view from inside the cockpit over the front wheel arches is pure 918 and the way the four-wheel drive system puts its 600 hp down is simply sensational.”
So perhaps the future of electric cars isn’t so grim after all. Even the admittedly traditional racer can’t seem to find fault with the Mission E’s dynamics. “I don’t mind admitting I had some reservations. I thought that the Mission E could feel a little heavy but the driving experience is seriously dynamic. The four-wheel steering, the performance and the braking ability were a really amazing experience.”
If it’s good enough for a successful Aussie racer, we’d say the Mission E is good enough for us. Now, like the rest of the mere mortals of the world, we’ll just have to wait to get our turn behind the wheel.
