911 Turbo Tribute

One-of-a-kind 911 Turbo was unveiled at the Dubai Icons of Porsche Festival.

The Porsche 911 Turbo is arguably the most iconic of all Porsche road cars. So, it makes sense that in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the company that they would choose to pay tribute to the mighty 911 Turbo. And that is exactly what they did at the Dubai Icons of Porsche Festival. It was there that they unveiled a one-off 992 Turbo that was an homage to the very first 911 Turbo. That first car was known as 911 Turbo Nr.1.

The new car was a collaboration with Style Porsche and Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, and Porsche Middle East and Africa. “This very special car is not only a showcase of what is possible with our Porsche personalization programs,” said Manfred Braunl, CEO of Porsche Middle East and Africa FZE. “It also highlights the brave and pioneering Porsche spirit as we look back to the inspiration for this project – the 911 Turbo Nr. 1.”

A Birthday Gift

The historic 911 Turbo Nr. 1 represents more than the start of the legendary Porsche Turbo models. The car was a gift from Ferry Porsche that he gave to his sister Louise Piëch for her 70th birthday. For those that are not aware, Piëch was much more than just a family member. In many ways, we have her to thank for the company that builds the cars we love today. Her father, Ferdinand Porsche founded the company, and he along with her brother Ferry and husband Anton Piëch were all arrested by the French Army in 1945. She bailed them out. Ferdinand died in 1951 and just a year and a half later her husband also passed. She would act as managing director of Porsche Holding in Austria starting in 1952.

911 Turbo Nr. 1

Looking at the pictures of the old car you may be a bit confused as the 911 Turbo has long been defined by the large rear fender flares. It is the wide body look that makes the car so distinctive. But 911 Turbo Nr. 1 features the narrow-chassis body from the Carrera. Also, this car is powered by a turbocharged 2.7-liter engine, not the larger 3.0-liter from later cars.

However, it does have a large rear wing that is another 911 Turbo trademark. Piëch picked out the interior herself. It features a red interior and Tartan fabric. This same interior treatment can be found on the 992 Turbo tribute car.

992 Turbo Tribute

Aside from a matching interior scheme, the 992 Turbo also takes exterior design cues from the older car. It is painted in GT Silver with Porsche decals in a red-and-black finish. The original car came with the iconic Fuchs wheels in black.

To replicate that look the new car has five-spoke wheels that are painted black and feature a chrome lip. It is not clear at the time this is published if this car will eventually be sold to a private customer or live in the Porsche Museum. Either way, it is a lovely tribute to a very important Porsche.
