New Porsche Diesel Models Reportedly on the Way
Porsche diesel looks set for U.S. return despite Volkswagen’s self-imposed ban.
Volkswagen is still working to clean up its massive diesel scandal. But that hasn’t deterred Porsche from considering a U.S. diesel revival. Despite VW’s self imposed ban, Car & Driver is reporting that both Porsche and Audi appear to be at least considering bringing diesel powered models back stateside.
“Audi and Porsche are likely to go ahead with the 3.0-liter V-6 TDI,” an unnamed source told C&D. Porsche refused to comment on the matter, but stated that they “believe in the diesel and will offer the technology where customers demand it.” Additionally, Audi told the mag “for us, the diesel is far from dead.”
Diesels proved to be quite popular in the U.S. before, and they’ve enjoyed decades of popularity in Europe. The issue stateside lies in tightening EPA emissions standards. Diesel produces more greenhouse gas than gasoline. In recent years, technology advances have also closed the gap between gas and diesel in regards to efficiency.
Volkswagen has developed a fix that would bring its 3.0 liter TDI into compliance with EPA standards, however. That engine’s reintroduction to the U.S. market would help Porsche better compete with BMW and Mercedes. Both of whom still offer diesel engines stateside. So long as VW treads carefully moving forward, it makes a lot of sense to begin their revival by offering a Porsche diesel option once again.
