Bay sold his personal 964 911 Turbo to a co-worker after it starred in ‘Bad Boys,’ only to see it fetch far more money at auction.

We all have stories of “the one that got away,” but in this case, we aren’t talking about fish or some old love interest – no, we’re talking about cars. Perhaps it was a car you owned that you sold far too cheaply that is now worth a ton of money, or maybe it’s that vehicle that you had the chance to buy for a killer price and passed, only to regret it for the rest of your life. This phenomenon isn’t just relegated to us non-famous folks either, as big-time Hollywood movie director Michael Bay just watched his 964 911 Turbo sell for a whopping $1.3 million at Mecum’s Kissimmee, Florida auction.

This wasn’t just Bay’s personal Porsche 964 911 Turbo, either – it starred in the 1995 movie Bad Boys with Martin Lawrence and Will Smith, playing a prominent role in the smash hit film. What’s interesting about the car is that Bay pulled it out of his personal collection to use on the big screen, since the budget for the film didn’t have enough money to go out and rent or buy one. Porsche also didn’t want to support the movie by lending him one, so Bay had no choice but to use his own, rare (one of 1,427 built and 350 imported into the U.S. for the 1994 model year) personal ride.

Bay later sold his beloved Porsche to Bad Boys producer Pat Sandstone, who eventually sold it to Matthew Drendel, a well-known collector and Porsche fanatic. Porsche fans have never really lost interest in the car either, as this 961 911 Turbo has remained a hot topic of discussion here at Rennlist and other places around the web. Thus, no one – including Bay – should have been surprised to see this car sell for huge money at auction.

And that’s precisely what happened as the hammer fell once bidding reached a whopping $1.3 million – short of the auction estimate of $1.5-$1.7 million, but a ton of money, regardless. Bay took to Instagram to voice his frustration, saying “Can you F—ing believe my personal Porsche I put in Bad Boys 1 – I sold for 60k to a friend,- today just sold at a car auction for $1,300,000! Boy was I stupid not to keep it! I gave my friend a deal because I liked him. But he sold it for 45k. No one knows but that car was stolen out of my garage. Recovered. By me.”

It certainly has to sting to see a car you sold for $60k go for $1.3 million later on down the road, so we feel Bay’s pain here. However, given his successful career that has included directing a number of some of the more successful box office hits of all time, we don’t imagine that he’s hurting financially, either.
